The Heart Killers 1×06 Review: Episode 6
Merry Christmas (to those who celebrate)! Looks like Santa left some heartbreak under your tree. And some emotional damage in your stocking. Yay.
Well, it looks like Bison and Fadel have finally learned that Kant and Style have been lying to them. In their defense, until this point, there hadn’t been any reason to suspect. (I mean, Fadel didn’t trust Kant from the start, but I imagine he got lulled into a false sense of security when nothing happened.) But once Kant figured out who their target was, and the police showed up at the event, there was something suspicious that they had to look into.
I’ll admit to being very frustrated that Bison got distracted by Kant texting him just as he was checking the security footage, and that he apparently never went back to check. Surely that would be the first thing they would do when they realized they may have been compromised. Especially because Fadel already caught him trying to get into their secret room once. That would be the logical assumption.
But this show is not logical. It’s wildly unserious. Why else would they have professional assassins make a plan to shoot a high-profile individual at a charity event full of people while wearing giant bear mascot costumes? Like, yes, while wearing the costumes, no one would see who they were. But I highly doubt that those costumes allow them to be mobile. And yet, they still managed to evade police. Because this show does not take itself seriously.
(By the way, did Kant not know that Babe was going to be at the event? I mean, he clearly suspected that Bison and Fadel were going to do something at this thing, and I’d like to think he would have tried to convince his brother not to go. Basically, I have a lot of probably very unimportant questions about this very specific thing.)
Bison actually discovers the truth by simply following Kant. He’s with Kant at the bar when Captain Christ calls, and as we’ve seen before, he is incredibly observant. (In fact, when he entered their secret room earlier, it looked like he caught on that something was different than it should be. But then he got distracted by his boyfriend and let himself slack off.) He’s also already suspicious of Kant, and when he declines the call and comes up with a story, Bison follows him.
And oof, both Bison and Fadel’s reactions to finding out their boyfriends betrayed them are heartbreaking. (You know, I actually didn’t notice Fadel crying until I saw a gifset of the scene on Tumblr.) I have a lot of complex feelings about both relationships, so hopefully I can coherently express them.
Oh, look, Kant and Style, it’s the consequences of your actions. After Kant informed Christ of what he suspects was Fadel and Bison’s plan, he and Style commiserate over the fact that they’ve fallen in love with two men who are about to go to prison. Style still has a bit of optimism, hoping that if they manage to convince Fadel and Bison not to go through with it, then they’ll be free and they can all be together.
I mentioned last week that I thought things were cooling off between Kant and Bison – at least on Kant’s end. He’s now been confronted with hard proof that Bison is a hitman, and I think he’s scared. Even while Style is wildly coming up with scenarios in which things end happily for all of them, Kant remains firmly entrenched in reality. But I’m not sure if this is because he truly feels this way, or if he’s just trying to convince himself that’s how he feels.
Not to mention, after things go belly up and Bison and Fadel disappear for a bit to lay low, it seems like Style is more concerned about Fadel than Kant is about Bison. They both tried getting in contact with their boyfriends with calls and texts, but that seems to be the extent of Kant’s worry. Style goes to the diner and finds the lights on and Fadel inside; I’d wager that he was going by every day just in case Fadel came back. But Bison is the one who comes to find Kant, which I think indicates that Kant was not really waiting for Bison to return.
Kant is obviously attracted to Bison – their first night together was before any of this happened – but there is a lot about their relationship that just isn’t true. It’s hard to tell just how much of Kant’s feelings are tied up in this charade. Sometimes I think that he has genuine feelings for Bison (he gave him the Northern Lights on their “last date”, that almost too adorable); sometimes I think that he’s older and has more experience and is good at manipulating the situation to his advantage.
Style, meanwhile, came into this completely unaware. He developed actual feelings for Fadel before finding out that he was a hitman. And unlike Kant, I think he’s still being as honest as he can in the relationship. Obviously he can’t come out and tell Fadel that Kant is a police informant, but aside from the way he shied away in last week’s episode, he hasn’t really changed the way he acts around Fadel. And I can’t be certain, but I think that Style has been giving Fadel opportunities to come clean; he seems to me like he’s trying to subtly hint that he’s totally cool with the whole hitman thing. (I also think him admitting that he doesn’t like heavy metal was a test to see how Fadel would react to him lying.)
On the flip side, I think Bison is absolutely totally gone on Kant. I’m not sure how experienced he is with relationships in general – never having a boyfriend doesn’t mean anything, and he clearly has had enough encounters to have definitive kinks – but this is new territory for him. And I think that he saw Babe at the event and panicked. He’s never had other people that he cares about (aside from his brother) and it overrode any of his training.
(Side note: I’ll have to rewatch to get the timing, but it looked to me like Fadel shot first – and missed – and then Bison tackled Babe in the chaos after. But then later Fadel claims Bison made him miss.)
And then we have Fadel. I don’t know what to do with him being so flustered when he ran into Style’s dad. I don’t know what to do with the fact that he confessed to Style after finding out that Style is informing on him. (Even though he’s not! I cannot stress that enough.) But it’s clear that he’s telling the truth. This entire episode he was opening up to Style a little bit at a time.
So, where do we go from here? How long do we think Fadel and Bison will pretend that they don’t know Kant and Style are informing on them? (This has strong “they don’t know we know they know” energy.) When is everything going to come out in the open? How is my heart supposed to take it?
