From Rusty Lake, the co-op puzzle game The Past Within has been released on the Nintendo Switch. This title allows you to explore The Past or The Future with a friend.

Having sold more than 1 million units across the PC and mobile devices (since its release back in November 2022), it’s good that excited fans can now experience The Past Within on the Nintendo Switch. The game is available at a 40% discount for only $3.59 via the Nintendo eShop until July 12, 2023. The original price is $5.99.

With it being a co-op offering, I like how The Past Within can be played cross-device (mobile, tablet, PC, or the NS) and doesn’t need an internet connection. Both players just need to have their own copy of the game to communicate with each other to solve puzzles. So, if your friend happens to have this title on another device already, you can buy the NS version and get playing.

Being described as an asynchronous point-and-click puzzle adventure, players need to investigate The Past and The Future as they work together to set into motion Albert Vanderboom’s cryptic plans from beyond the grave.

Take note; where the previous Rusty Lake games consisted of purely 2D environments, in The Past Within players get to see the universe in 3D.

The Past Within is developer Rusty Lake’s first game to be launched on the Nintendo Switch. The story is, of course, set in the Rusty Lake universe (spanning an impressive sixteen titles!).

Here’s the trailer!

I like the simplicity of the trailer. Using actual human players, the promotional content clearly shows what you should expect while playing The Past Within. You really do have to work together, with each move impacting the player in different ways. I like how each player is seeing a different puzzle but said puzzles are still connected.

Talking more about the developer, Rusty Lake is an indie game studio based in Amsterdam, founded by Robin Ras & Maarten Looise. Since 2015, they have developed 16 surrealistic point-and-click adventure games in the Rusty Lake Universe. Inspired by David Lynch’s TV series Twin Peaks, the story of all these games are intertwined and every installment reveals more about the Rusty Lake mysteries.

Have you played games set in the Rusty Lake universe? Are you excited about The Past Within on the NS?
