Voltron Classic ’84 Legendary Lion Collection – Blue and Red Lion Review
The Voltron Classic ’84 Legendary Lion Collection, from Playmates Toys, offers Voltron fans a piece of nostalgia. Each Legendary Lion in the set has a distinct, retro look, bringing the feel of the 1984 figures to the present.
Playmates Toys sent over the Voltron Classic ’84 Legendary Lion Collection Red and Blue Lion for review. The opinions are my own.
I’m a fan of Playmates Toys. The company has done an amazing job, offering Voltron fans with a number of figures and collections to choose from. I’m glad that the company decided to reintroduce the classic 1984 figures for a new generation of fans.
Coming to the Classic Legendary Blue Lion and the Classic Legendary Red Lion, both figures have a unique look. The paint job is great and I love how the gray of the limbs reminded me of old figures. While the figures might look flimsy to some, due to their retro-style, they’re both capable of handling accidental falls and some rough handling. Yes, I like dropping toys (that are meant for children to play with as well as adult collectors) on the floor. It’s my way to determine their quality.
Now, let’s talk about the individual figures from the Voltron Classic ’84 Legendary Lion Collection.
The Classic Legendary Red Lion
This figure forms Voltron’s right arm. It’s also smaller than the Classic Lions that form the legs. You’ll notice a missile-firing mechanism that attaches to the figure. The button to fire the three-headed missile is at the top of the mechanism. This figure also comes with a dagger (to be held in the figure’s mouth). You also get Voltron’s sword with this figure.
Talking about the articulation, there’s a joint in the middle that allows for some movement. The flexible tail can be pushed in. There’s articulation in the fore and hindlimbs. The paws (ankles and wrists), knees, and elbows are also articulated. The head can turn but can’t be moved up or down. The mouth snaps shut to hold the weapon you prefer.
The classic design also makes this figure easy to handle (compared to the Voltron Metal Defender Collection) when transforming it into Voltron’s right arm. For the transformation process:
- Take away the weapons.
- The arms fold in at the elbows.
- The hind legs fold in at the knees.
- Push in the tail.
- Take out the peg from below to attach it to the Classic Legendary Black Lion.
The Classic Legendary Blue Lion
For me, the Classic Legendary Blue Lion looks the coolest from the set. This figure makes Voltron’s right leg. It comes with a missile-firing mechanism that attaches to the figure. The button for firing the three-headed missile is present near the bottom of the mechanism. You also get another non-firable weapon. In addition, there’s a three-bladed weapon that this lion can holds in its mouth.
The articulation includes the fore and hind limbs as well as the knees, elbows, and paws (the ankles and wrists). Unlike, the Classic Legendary Red Lion, this figure’s head can move up and down which due to its head becoming Voltron’s foot. Again, the classic design makes this figure very easy to handle during the transformation process.
- Take away the weapons.
- Move the head up.
- The front limbs fold in at the elbows.
- The hind legs fold in at the knees. Super easy!
- Tail falls on the spine.
- This figure is ready to be attached to the Classic Legendary Black Lion.
