WebToon Recommendation: “The Empire’s Maid”

In The Empire’s Maid, a woman aspiring to ascend from her position as a maid wakes up in the past to atone for her role in the empire’s future collapse.

Leona strives to impress her father with her financial successes, but when he expresses his disappointment and plans to marry her off, she decides to become a maid to the Imperial Palace of the Hamel Empire. That would mean forfeiting her family name and never marrying. Ridding herself of her indifferent, greedy father and living her own life are what she actually wants. As Leona begins this new life and position, she suddenly stumbles upon political turmoil.

To make herself known, Leona impresses the Emperor’s concubine, Viotta Helsian, and becomes her loyal maid. If Leona can help the Empress Viotta gain political power and usurp the crown prince’s throne, then she’d obtain recognition and glory herself. But then Leona becomes part of Hamel’s downfall, and when she’s thrown back to the past following her death, she vows to prevent that future by protecting the crown prince.

As with webtoons featuring villainesses and evil women, the protagonist in The Empire’s Maid seeks to repair the damage and change her destiny. She uses her past knowledge and experience to manipulate relationships and events to hopefully avoid a future tragedy. Leona acknowledges the choices she’d made before getting her second chance. Her actions show her remorse. She wants to evade Hamel’s collapse by serving the crown prince and keeping up with the political intrigue.

But what’s truly impressive about this webtoon is Leona’s character development. In the first episode of The Empire’s Maid, Leona cuts ties with her own father after she realizes that she’d never earn his appreciation, and yet she continues to crave power and validation as Viotta’s maid.

After waking up four years into the past, however, Leona begins to earn her way up to being the crown prince’s maid. She doesn’t wait until her desires are handed to her. An active character, Leona moves the plot along with actions and intentions like taming the crown prince’s unruly horse, whistleblowing the housekeeper for her crimes, and encouraging a fellow maid to stand up for herself.

Instead of bringing down potential threats and obstacles for power, she uplifts others in hopes of altering the future. Leona’s path to redemption and holding herself accountable makes this fantasy webtoon a highly recommended read.
