Roguelite Mystery/Horror Indie Game “Paper Cut Mansion” Is Ready For Your Wishlist!
Thunderful and Space Lizard Studio have announced the rouguelite mystery/horror indie game Paper Cut Mansion. As implied by the name, the upcoming title is set in a fictional world made of cardboard. The title is looking toward a 2022 release.
Paper Cut Mansion will be available on PC, PlayStation 4 & 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S sometime in 2022. The gameplay involves exploring the titular mansion floor by floor, solving puzzles, battling enemies, and completing quests. Of course, your character will be able to unlock new abilities to make each run easier as you try to uncover every mystery behind the mansion.
There’s also a dimension-hopping mechanic that lets you leap between alternate versions of the same location. According to the promo material, changing dimensions will impact gameplay as well as the aesthetic.
You will get to play as Toby. He has been described as a police detective who arrives at the road leading to the eponymous old mansion. Each run offers you the chance to collect another piece of evidence that can be tacked on the Evidence Board. There are a bunch of characters Toby will get to interact with. Take note that every character won’t be friendly. While some will offer you quests (completing them will provide access to helpful rewards), some will try to hide from you or hurt you in some manner.
Here’s the trailer!
While I’m a fan of certain types of mystery-solving games, when it comes to Paper Cut Mansion, the visuals are what stand out the most for me. This indie title does have a very unique look. Every texture was hand-drawn on paper and then scanned into a computer to be modeled into 3D papercrafts.
I don’t know about you, but if I was part of the studio’s promotional team, I would be thinking of offering actual cardboard models of certain in-game characters and items as physical collectibles. There needs to be some kind of Paper Cut Mansion diorama.
As for the weapons and abilities, there seem to be a bunch of cards that, depending on the ones you select, will let you ‘roll on your back’, ‘build a shooting turret’, ‘use sledge hammer’, and more. I like how you can customize Toby’s appearance depending on the gear you select. And even though there are puzzles for you to solve, the gameplay has a good amount of action, too (judging by the trailer).
Frankly, I wouldn’t have minded this indie title to feature linear RPG storytelling and gameplay instead of being a roguelite offering, but oh well.
You can add Paper Cut Mansion to your Wishlist by heading over to Steam.
“I’m really excited to give people a first look at this intricate paper world we’ve been crafting. We wanted to create something unique, but that draws inspiration from the classic 80s and 90s works of Tim Burton and Jim Henson,” shared Space Lizard Studios’ Gabriele Caruso. “The team has worked really hard to create a mysterious and visually appealing world that’s going to draw players in, and provide them with a compelling roguelite loop that’s going to keep them coming back. I can’t wait to tell you more about the game as we get closer to release!”
