His Dark Materials Cast Talks Season 3 At NYCC 2022

His Dark Materials NYCC

It all comes down to this – a massive uprising against the Authority for the soul of everyone in every reality. One of my most anticipated panels at this year’s New York Comic Con was His Dark Materials, since the last time the cast was promoting, we were all in lockdown. But this year James McAvoy (Asriel), Amir Wilson (Will), Jane Tranter, and Dan McCulloch (and Dafne Keen, virtually, due to last minute schedule conflicts) were on hand to give us the scoop on the third and final season of the series.

I was fortunate enough to be in the press room for His Dark Materials where the cast and producers talked about what we can expect in season 3. The television adaptation of The Amber Spyglass, the third novel in author Philip Pullman’s original trilogy, is perhaps the most ambitious undertaking yet. There are new characters (and returning characters!), new species, and new locations. We will see the Land of the Dead and the Clouded Mountain. We will meet the Mulefa. And all of that has to be managed while still allowing for the growth and development of our core cast.

Lord Asriel is back! After being absent for all of season 2, Asriel is back with a bang, having spent his time offscreen assembling an army to take on the Authority. (An Asriel-centric episode from season 2 had to be cut due to the pandemic, but James explained the basic plot of the episode in our interview with him below.) He is absolutely convinced that what he is doing is right and is singularly focused on accomplishing his goal.

Will is also dealing with some growing pains. He is aware of what the knife he holds is meant to do, and he will be struggling with the desire to fulfill his father’s dying wish. When season 3 starts, it will pick up several months from where season 2 left off. Will has been searching for Lyra and is now a little more skilled with the Knife than he was when we last saw him.

Check out interviews with the cast and crew of His Dark Materials:

They premiered the season 3 trailer at the panel, and if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t worry, it’s right below!

His Dark Materials returns December 5 with a two-episode premiere. Two episodes will air every week.
