Fans of The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai franchises can look forward to owning the original The Karate Kid movie on 4K UHD come June 18, 2024.

From Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, the upcoming home release of The Karate Kid will include extra content for fans as they enjoy a restored version of the original camera negative presented in 4K resolution with Dolby Vision. The home release will feature a cover that has been inspired by VHS tapes.

Directed by Oscar-winner John G. Avildsen, The Karate Kid tells the story of Daniel (Ralph Macchio) learning martial arts as well as a bunch of coming-of-age life lessons from the iconic Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita). The narrative follows Daniel preparing himself to face Johnny (William Zabka), the leader of the ‘Cobra Kai’. The storyline is about standing up to bullies, finding your inner strength, respecting different cultures, and more.

The bonus material in the 40th Anniversary 4K UHD release includes:

  • All-New Commentary with the creators of Cobra Kai Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg.
  • Over 30 minutes of Deleted Scene Dailies.
  • 4 Deleted Scenes.
  • Remembering The Karate Kid Featurette
  • Theatrical Trailer

The Blu-ray release includes:

  • Blu-Pop™ Pop-Up Track
  • Commentary with director John G. Avildsen, writer Robert Mark Kamen, and actors Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita
  • “The Way of The Karate Kid” Multi-Part Making-Of Featurette
  • “Beyond the Form” Featurette
  • “East Meets West: A Composer’s Notebook”
  • “Life of Bonsai” Featurette

The Karate Kid has an approximate runtime of 127 minutes and has been rated PG.

The 4K UHD has been presented in 2160p Ultra High Definition, 1.85:1 with the audio being English Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 Compatible) | English 5.1 DTS-HD MA | English Stereo DTS-HD MA.

Released back in 1984, The Karate Kid was a huge commercial and cultural success, spanning a long-lasting franchise with the live-action Cobra Kai series on Netflix looking to release season six sometime in 2024.

Of course, I’m a fan of the OG film as well as the Cobra Kai series that continues the story with many of the original cast returning to reprise their iconic roles. I think we have all mimicked Daniel doing the one-leg stance (the Crane Kick Stance) as kids.

Take note; a new Karate Kid movie for the big screen is scheduled for a December 2024 debut. However, details are being kept under wraps. The cast includes Ben Wang (American Born Chinese) in the titular role along with Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio, and Ming-Na Wen.

Are you excited about the 4K UHD avaibality of The Karate Kid?
