“The Mandalorian and Grogu” Teaser Trailer Breakdown

Yesterday, Lucasfilm shared the first official teaser trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu film. In 2026, Star Wars returns to the big screen for the first time since 2019 by bringing the characters who kicked off the Disney+ era of streaming.
The release was planned to happen last week during Jimmy Kimmel Live, but because of the actions of the current administration, the head of the FCC’s threats, and Jimmy being suspended, the release was pushed to Monday.
There are no official details on what story we are getting, and no major leaks have happened at this point. The official synopsis released from StarWars.com reads, “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu (as himself).”
There isn’t much to go on from this synopsis, making this feel like a larger big-screen episode of The Mandalorian series. But we, as Star Wars fans, love to speculate, sometimes irresponsibly. So, let’s have some fun and look at some of the images from the trailer.

First, Sigourney Weaver plays New Republic officer Colonel Ward. I thought maybe for a moment she was playing Snap Wexley’s mother, Temmin Wexley. Temmin and Snap were first introduced in the Aftermath series from Chuck Wendig, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. So, from what we’ve seen, Colonel Ward hires Mando and Grogu for some kind of mission. Now, I would love it if they brought in the Empire Hunters idea from the Aftermath series. So, if she gives Mando a bounty to hunt Empire Officers, I’m here for it.

This aligns with the scene at the end of the trailer, where we see AT-ATs walking along a thin mountain pass in the snow. Also in the trailer, we see Mando jetbacking out of one of those AT-ATs, so the Empire remnants will be part of the story.

In another part of the trailer, we see Rutt the Hutt. First introduced in The Clone Wars series, and is the son of Jabba the Hutt. Rumors are that he’s going to be voiced by Jeremy Allen White. We see Rutt inside what looks like a gladiator arena, and he has been hitting the gym. We also see Mando fighting in the same arena, and Mando and Grogu enjoying some of the fights.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Mando has to prove himself in the arena to get some information that helps him find whoever he has been sent to find.
The Twin Hutts from The Book of Boba Fett are also a major part of the poster released with the trailer on Monday. The Hutts and the arena fights may be the second act of the film.

Zeb Orrelios, who made his live-action debut in The Mandalorian, was shown fighting in a hallway. Are we going to get a Daredevil-level hallway fight? Please! Zeb, a member of The Ghost crew from Star Wars Rebels, was never a character I thought we would see on the screen. But here he is. This is another example of bringing animated characters to live action, and I love to see it. (Rebels is my second favorite Star Wars story.)
We have seen Zeb and Mando walking together in other stills released. This makes me think they are going to team up to find whoever they are after. Mando is making some important friends in the galaxy. Wonder what Boba and Fennic are up to?
And the real star of the movie, Grogu, is doing what he does best, being the cutest. I just wanted to share these shots from the trailer.

I really think we are going to get some type of Imperial hunting in this movie. HOWEVER, I feel that this is going to do two things, storytelling-wise, for both the Star Wars galaxy and Lucasfilm in the real world.
Real-world stuff: Like I said before, we haven’t had a new Star Wars film on the big screen since 2019. So, this will be the big return to theaters. The film cost a relatively small amount, rumored to be $120 million, giving it a chance to make a good profit and win for Disney. (Which they need right now.) And this will be the beginning of a year-long celebration of 50 years of Star Wars.
In galaxy stuff: This feels like the first of a series of Avenger-level build-up events/stories that could lead to the showdown with Thrawn. Thrawn is now a major threat in the New Republic. Some of what he is going to be doing and setting up will happen in the Ahsoka series. But this feels to me like a build-up to the Dave Filoni film. And I can’t wait.
What happened to Jimmy Kimmel was appalling and made me question my love and support of Disney. Yesterday, they announced that Jimmy is returning to his late-night show, giving some hope that there are still people willing to stand up against authoritative rule. I wasn’t going to cover the release of this trailer, doing my part to protest what happened. Seeing that they have come to some resolution, I felt better about talking about this trailer.
Star Wars is my favorite franchise, and I can’t wait to see Mando and Grogu on the big screen. I want to do a midnight screening like the old days, but I don’t think that will happen. However, I will have to rewatch the series because, of course, I “need” to.
