A new gameplay trailer for the open-world ocean-fantasy RPG Sea of Remnants has been released by NetEase Games. Along with the gameplay showcase, a Closed Alpha Test has also been announced.

I’m not the biggest fan of pirate-esque video games. However, I have to say that I’m quite intrigued by what was shown in the new gameplay trailer for the upcoming Sea of Remnants. Along with the ocean exploration aspect, including a bunch of pirate ship battles, the gameplay seems to have a lot of content when it comes to exploring numerous islands. Not only that, but the visuals stood out for me, especially the fact that the characters are basically puppets instead of in-game humans.

Before I talk more about the game itself, you should take note that the Closed Alpha Test will be held on February 5, 2026. Called the “Wanderer Test”, it will run until February 12, 2026, on PC. You can go ahead and apply for the test by following the official Sea of Remnants Twitter account and engaging with the trailer post or by joining the official Discord channel and completing the application questionnaire.

You have until January 23, 2026, to apply. Good luck to those who do. Spaces are very limited.

A specific release date for Sea of Remnants hasn’t been announced yet. However, it will be launching on PlayStation 5 and PC/Steam. It has been developed by Joker Studio (Identity V).

As shared by the opening moments of the trailer, you will assume the role of a puppetfolk sailor who has no memories of their past. Looks like the sailor wants to remember, but then again, there’s a silver lining in how having no memories allows you to begin again.

The gameplay mechanics include traversing vast oceans, battling enemy ships, racing, visiting islands, playing minigames, and a lot more. The enemies range from giant bats to “treasure-laden giant crabs” and “cannon-wielding” gorillas… okay? Ha!

There’s also a cooking mechanic, a crafting mechanic, along with the ability to customize your fleet and form bonds with… wait for it… more than 300 companions!

Apparantly, your choices will impact how the ever-evolving pirate city of Orbtopia is shaped.

The platforming featured in the promotional content has caught my interest. I do enjoy solving puzzles. It also gives this particular game more than just trying to wreck pirate ships. The fantastical enemies include a vicious mermaid. Also, it looks like the battle system will be turn-based.

Talking about the lore, there’s a legend that talks about how beyond the moon lies another sea where all of your questions will be answered. When a sailor opens their eyes again, will they see a glass bottle floating in magenta currents, or a butterfly on a rusted mast?

I don’t know what that means, but if I were to assume, I would take it that seeing a floating bottle might mean your memories are out there somewhere, waiting to be collected, while the butterfly might denote some kind of metamorphosis.

Yeah, I’m sold. Let’s see how the Closed Alpha Test goes and what the dev team brings to the table upon Early Access or a full release. If interested, you can Wishlist it on Steam and the PlayStation Store right now.
