Play as the Grim Reaper in Action-Adventure “Spindle” Releasing This October

From Deck13 Spotlight and Wobble Ghost, the action-adventure indie game Spindle will be available on PC (via Steam) and the Nintendo Switch come October 13, 2025.

In Spindle you will take on the role of a new grim reaper named Dengel. Of course, you are tasked with guiding souls to rest in the afterlife. However, there’s something up. Apparantly, “nobody seems to die anymore,” and that’s not a good thing. Accompanied by your trusty pig, you will need to traverse various locations and face powerful enemies to try and restore balance to the world and stop existence from collapsing.

I mean, the stakes are high for an indie video game featuring cute old-school handcrafted pixel visuals. Also, I’m so here for a grim reaper capable of rolling out of harm’s way and being an action bada** with his scythe. Having a pig as your companion adds to the whimsy of the overall project. I want to learn the in-game explanation of such a creative choice.

As for the deeper meanings in the narrative, the dev team knew they were making a game about death. That’s why you will get to experience a project about “connection and healing.” The team wanted to remind players that everybody processes grief in their own way. Community feedback was very impactful in shaping such a game to explore the numerous ways people cope with loss.

I do like the visuals. This is a very adorable version of Death. The gameplay mechanic seems to include the ability to ride atop your partner pig. You can also control the pig to solve certain puzzles. And I could be wrong, but it looks like Dengel has the ability to transform a piece of wood into solid rock, quite possibly by draining life energy. I’m also intrigued by the mystery surrounding Dengel being given the role of Death.

As for Wobble Ghost, it’s an indie team based in Berlin, comprised of the trio named Tom, Kim, and Felix. They began their journey back in 2018. Spindel seems to be the team’s first release.
