Surf! Collect! Escape! Upcoming Co-Op RPG “Surfpunk” Gets Fun Gameplay Trailer!
The upcoming video game Surfpunk is all about allowing players to surf the ocean in style and visit numerous islands to retrieve ancient tech. Of course, there are hordes of monsters to kill along the way.
Being honest, when I first got to know Surfpunk I thought it was yet another PvP game (I don’t have anything against them, but there are just so many out there!) trying to appeal to the massive Fortnite base. However, I couldn’t be wrong-er. From the looks of it, Surfpunk is about working together with your friends to accomplish various missions; mainly retrieving alien tech and other resources from randomized islands while escaping ever-spawning enemies.
In the tropical anime-inspired world of Surfpunk, you play as professionals known as Raiders. They take contracts to raid ancient island ruins to scavenge previous materials. You will need to collect as much loot as possible before being overrun by creatures called the Sumi. The mysterious enemies have been described as ink-like creatures that corrupt the landscape.
Judging from what’s shown in the gameplay trailer, during one of the missions, the goal is to locate and extract the Evress, a precious energy source for the Raiders’ way of life. Even though the game can be played solo, I like the emphasis on teamwork. The Sumi can easily overpower a team of players if they decide to stray too far from their partners. Also, while carrying the Evress, your teammates (up to 3 other Raiders) will need to do what they can to protect you. The longer you stay, the deadlier the Sumi creatures become.
I also like how collecting various resources can help with crafting certain items. For example, you can craft a ladder to reach certain areas. Also, the Rushboards (the surfboards the Raiders use to travel between islands) can be used to tow items and to come up with unique strategies to fight enemies.
And to top it all off, the big escape is done while surfing a tsunami. Cool!
Here’s the action-packed gameplay trailer that features details from Creative Director Eric Angelillo.
After each raid, you will return to the Beastship where you will be able to craft new weapons, enhance gear, and prepare for the next task. The procedurally generated maps make for a lot of gameplay sessions. There are also unique classes and loadouts to experiment with so you can find what best fits your style.
From indie game studio Double Stallion, you can go ahead and Wishlist Surfpunk right now on Steam. You can also join the game’s community Discord Server.
