Prepare Yourselves, Nuggets: “Deepwater Horizon” Trailer Released
The grand tradition of seeing movies I normally wouldn’t because of specific actors continues with Deepwater Horizon.
The first trailer for the oil-rig disaster movie was released today, yet another in a long line of movies based on actual, relatively recent events, following in the footsteps of films like World Trade Center and United 93. In this case, the true story in the “inspired by a true story” is the Deepwater Horizon, which was drilling for oil for BP in the Gulf of Mexico when it exploded off the coast of Louisiana back in 2010. 11 workers out of the 126 on board were killed in the explosion. The explosion caused the rig to burn and sink, resulting in a massive offshore oil spill (the famous BP spill) – the largest environmental disaster in American history.
The Deepwater Horizon trailer looks like any other disaster movie trailer – think San Andreas or 2012 except this one actually happened – and therefore promises a lot of thrilling action sequences and scenes that will gut you and leave you a blubbering, weepy mess. Movies like this help to humanize disasters in a way few other things can. You may be affected reading about it or even watching it play out on the news, but there’s nothing quite like “experiencing” it the way one would through a movie. Every time I watch Apollo 13, I’m convinced they’re not going to make it back, even though I know that they do.
I actually have high hopes for the film, mostly due to its stellar cast. The teaser trailer revolves heavily around Mark Wahlberg’s character and his wife (played by Kate Hudson) at home with their daughter, explaining the drilling process for those of us who may be unfamiliar. Interspersed with the scenes of domestic bliss are brief glimpses aboard the doomed rig, showing us big Hollywood names like Kurt Russell and John Malkovich, plus – to this fangirl’s delight – Dylan O’Brien. (Gina Rodriguez also stars, but was not shown in this teaser.)
Even though I like the action parts, I’m not particularly a fan of disaster movies; they stress me out, give me extreme paranoia, and generally make it so that I don’t sleep for several days. (Every time New York City gets a blizzard I think of The Day After Tomorrow.) However, as expressed on numerous occasions, I am incredibly shallow, and this movie features Dylan O’Brien dirty and with a beard, so you’d better believe I’ll be seeing this film when it’s released September 30th. In fact, I will probably shell out the extra money to see it in IMAX – I’ll just have to spend the week prior to the release emotionally preparing myself for it. (It’s been kind of a rough week for Dylan fans; we’re all clinging to every tidbit that gets released about his recovery.)
Check out the trailer and let us know what you think!
