iZombie 4×12 Review: You’ve Got to Hide Your Liv Away

If I could only say one thing about “You’ve Got to Hide Your Liv Away”, it’s that it was an episode of convenient events.

Granted, that makes it sound like I didn’t care for the episode as a whole, which isn’t entirely true. It certainly had its weak points, but it was still enjoyable overall – and as the penultimate season 4 episode, it certainly did its job driving the show’s overall plot forward.

I just wish so many of those steps forward hadn’t seemed like ones of pure convenience. Now, I do feel a bit silly for not seeing the whole “Renegade, turn yourself in or Curtis dies” threat coming, especially as this is Liv we’re talking about – of course she wasn’t going to let her friend die for her. Which everyone knew, but only Major acted upon, and while I know he was just trying to protect her (from herself more than anything), just…not cool, dude. Not cool.

And yet, even as I say that, watching him and Liv on [supposedly] happily married couple brain was actually kind of giving me some feels? As fellow Geekiary writer Erin says, we like “Dumb Major” just fine…”Stupid Major”, not so much. Major kidnapping Liv to save her from herself, and then acting the way he was acting on this brain, was definitely being “Dumb Major”, so I suppose that’s why I found myself falling for his and Liv’s antics – at least at first – in “You’ve Got to Hide Your Liv Away”.

Unfortunately for Major, not only did the husband in that couple drive his wife so crazy that she caused the car crash that killed them, but Liv herself is very strong-willed and apparently no brain could make her forget about her desire to save her friend (at least not for very long). That said, as much as he’s been getting on my nerves this season, I’m not fond of Liv leaving him locked up the way she did. Sure, she went back and saved him from Russ (and again, how convenient that he showed up then and there and Liv was able to kill him), but what if Major doesn’t end up getting more brain tubes in time?! Because oh yeah, she did turn herself in, even though Levon had already tried to take her place, and now both of them are in Fillmore-Graves custody with that zombie-killing anvil looming over their heads.

Another convenient part of “You’ve Got to Hide Your Liv Away” was Ravi having his zombie ‘time of the month’ right when Liv was gone but Clive needed to solve a murder. I know that this entire story line was used to put some pieces together regarding Brother Love having at least one sympathizer within Fillmore-Graves, but I still think there might have been a better way to do it, even if it was pretty funny watching Ravi on McKenna a.k.a. “White Girl’s” brain. Liv already suffered through the brain of a social media-obsessed young woman, anyway, so I’m at least happy they didn’t rehash that with her again.

Speaking of Brother Love, praise the iZombie writers for finally showing us that Blaine is playing his father. I’m still not sure what his end game is, but the fact that he must have one – one that doesn’t involve actually being a part of Angus’ creepy cult – is a reveal I knew I needed.

“You’ve Got to Hide Your Liv Away” ended on a high note…if you like Clive and Dale, that is, and honestly before this season I did…but I was kinda digging Clive and Michelle, and I wasn’t too happy with how Dale acted earlier this season, so I’m a bit ‘meh’ about his offer to become a zombie – and his marriage proposal. Of course Ravi also discovered that Isobel’s brain holds the key to a cure, but I imagine that there will be a twist in next week’s finale that puts off any (or many) of our beloved characters receiving it.
