“Summer Camp Island” Is Truly Magical
Pack your bags and get ready for a magical trip to Summer Camp Island, Cartoon Network’s latest animated series from creator Julia Pott!
Pott will be the second female showrunner in CN history, after Rebecca Sugar of Steven Universe fame. Also like Sugar, Pott is an Adventure Time alum – and with episodes like “Gumbaldia” under her belt, Summer Camp Island promises to be very special indeed!
Cartoon Network will debut the first 20 episodes of the Sundance Festival darling on a continuous loop all weekend starting Saturday, July 7 at 6 a.m. (ET/PT) and running through Sunday, July 8. This is a first for CN, and the episodes will also be available on the Boomerang streaming service as a part of a very special double-network takeover event. To complete this immersive experience, you can check out the Summer Camp Island AR app, and explore the island in real time.
The first two episodes are “The First Day” and “Monster Babies,” and they are positively delightful. Best friends Hedgehog and Oscar get dropped off, each anxious in different ways about their first-ever away from home experience. The camp is much more than making pot holders – magic is real on Summer Camp Island! The counselors are witches, monsters roam freely, and the moon is alive.
Voice talent includes Charlyne Yi (Ruby in Steven Universe and Chloe in We Bare Bears), Judd Hirsch of Independence Day fame, and Julia Pott herself as head (and meanest) camp counselor Susie the witch. The two main characters are voiced by actual kids Oona Laurence and Elliott Smith; very cool!
From what I’ve seen so far, Summer Camp Island combines the whimsy and worldbuilding of Adventure Time, the friendship-through-neuroatypicality of Apple and Onion, and the cleverly subversive character choices of Steven Universe.
Make sure you catch the weekend-long event starting Saturday, July 7.
