Why You Should Watch Queer Comedy Series “OUT On Stage” Premiering On Dekkoo This January!

OUT On Stage is the first ever all queer stand-up series, and it more than delivers when it comes to well-written jokes and social commentary. Do support this show when it premieres on Dekkoo on January 17, 2019!

I was provided screeners of OUT On Stage for review. The opinions are my own.

OUT On Stage is a six-episode series featuring queer comedians Jonathan Rowell, Brendan Scannell, Casey Ley, Julian Michael, Irene Tu, Jared Goldstein, Raneir Pollard, Kyle Shire, Jordan Pease, Chris Bryant, Eric Hahn, Daniel Webb, Joe Dosch, Gloria Bigelow, Anthony Desamito, Janine Brito, A.B. Cassidy, and Zach Noe Towers (who also serves as the host).

As for the show, from production companies Comedy Dynamics and Dekkoo, each episode is around 30 minutes long. Towers does an impressive job of introducing the comedians getting the spotlight in every episode. He also throws in some short and funny jokes. It is clear everyone is having a good time, and you will laugh with them, too.

I enjoyed watching OUT On Stage because it provided a much-needed platform to queer voices in comedy. A majority of times, the LGBTQIA+ community is used as the punchline of jokes by some very distasteful comedians, and I’m all for calling out such individuals. Being insensitive and rude doesn’t do your so-called comedic work any favors!

Why not allow queer comedians to tell jokes about their sexuality and experiences? All of the comedians in OUT On Stage come from different walks of life, and I couldn’t get enough of the laughs they delivered while highlighting certain racial and social issues which are, unfortunately, still very much alive.

“OUT on Stage has been a real passion project for me,” said Zach Noe Towers said. “What an incredible experience it’s been to bring together such a gorgeously funny group of queer comedians. Each and every person featured in the content has such a unique perspective and I’m thrilled that we’re being given a platform for those hilarious voices to be heard.”

He continued, “I don’t think comedy is an easy field for anyone, but it can sometimes be especially difficult for those of us with unique, diverse voices. We’re a much smaller percentage of the population, stage time can be harder to come by, and often times audiences aren’t as willing to give us a chance. Even our peers can present a challenge. Open mics are often peppered with the voices of less progressive people, some of which find humor in homo/transphobic material. I would even be willing to bet that every queer comic out there has had to sit and listen to someone turn their life into a punchline. And this is why projects like “OUT on Stage” are so important. It not only provides a platform for new queer voices on the rise, but it brings us together. It creates a space for diverse voices to flourish and it’s so important to have this kind of representation available.”

I want more of OUT On Stage and I hope we get a second season soon!
