Colin Morgan Casts a Spell in “Benjamin” Trailer
Fans of Colin Morgan, British humor, and LGBTQ+ stories can all find something to like in the Benjamin trailer, which dropped today.
As an avid fan of Colin Morgan, I eagerly anticipate each new role, as he always manages to choose some really amazing films. I get even more excited if it looks like he actually lives through to the end. (Although, really, he’s only died in three movies…and some plays… You know what? It happens often enough. I’ll allow it.) That’s one of the reasons I was so happy when I saw the Benjamin trailer.
Benjamin is the feature film directorial debut of British comedian Simon Amstell, best known as the host of Popworld and Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Amstell’s previous film – Carnage, a mock-documentary about a largely vegan near-future – aired on BBC’s iPlayer in 2017. Benjamin, which Amstell also wrote, premiered at the London Film Festival in October 2018 and will hit theaters in the UK on March 15. (No word yet on any international releases, but you can bet that I’ll be seeing it if and when it comes to the States.)
Colin stars as the titular character, a promising young filmmaker whose first film was very well-received and is currently working on his second. (He uses his own accent, which is always a treasure.) Phénix Brossard is Noah, a French singer and Benjamin’s love interest. The tone of the trailer seems to be bittersweet – your standard dry British humor peppered with a few moments of sweet romance and genuine emotional vulnerability.
Odds are good that I will probably cry at some point, because I don’t think I’ve ever been able to make it through one of Colin’s films without crying, but this may actually be an LGBTQ+ film where people don’t end up horribly unhappy. We have so precious few of those movies. I’m also quite excited to see Colin in a romantic role – while some of his other films have included romance (Island, The Happy Prince), they were not exactly happy or healthy relationships.
