Entire “Now Apocalypse” Season 1 Dumped On Streaming! Were The Ratings That Bad?

I need help trying to understand why Starz decided to make the entire first season of Now Apocalypse available on its app, because as far as I can tell such a decision is because the show didn’t do good ratings-wise on TV. Am I wrong? Do let me know.

The moment I saw the trailer for Now Apocalypse I knew it was going to be a mess. And not the good kind.

The footage from the trailer showed Gregg Arakai had refused to grow with the changing times and how sexuality is handled in modern media. To me, the show felt like content which was poorly written and was hoping to attract a considerable amount of viewers through fantasy-gay castings (straight actors cast in explicitly gay roles for a viewer’s wish fulfillment).

The show premiered this month and everything I thought about it was correct.

Going over the ratings, the premiere of Now Apocalypse couldn’t even break into the Top 50 Cable telecasts for March 10, 2019. The episode was able to only get 147k views and a 0.04 demo. The second episode’s viewership was even lower at only 124k.

The third episode is scheduled to air on March 24, 2019. However, the network has gone ahead and made the entire first season available on the Starz app.

Gregg Araki has created a vibrant world filled with relatable characters and relationship storylines and we have found that many fans want to consume this content as soon as possible,” said Carmi Zlotnik, president of programming for Starz. “We are giving this audience every opportunity to dive into the crazy world of Now Apocalypse and ride the roller coaster of the season at their own pace.”

The show is planned to continue its weekly TV airings through May 12, 2019.

What is going on? Why have the entire show be available on the Starz app and also continue with TV broadcasts? Will the weekly airings occur if even fewer people tune in?

I don’t know. To me, it looks like the network realized the show wasn’t a success and they are trying to do what they can to get rid of it in the best manner possible.

And here I was looking forward to feeling glad about Tyler Posey taking on a queer role because he wanted to help actual queer kids feel supported. I guess he won’t be able to do that as much as he wanted to? Such a loss.

Feel free to share your thoughts with us.

  1. Lmaooooooo you utter liar. You were “looking forward” to this? Sure you were, that’s why you raked Posey over the coals for taking on a queer role and then immediately forgave DOB for doing the same thing. You wanted this queer-positive show to crash and burn because of your grudge against a POC kid who’s just trying his best. Well, congrats. You got your wish. Now the show has tanked, which means we can forget about this kind of stuff ever happening on any other network. I hope you like more boring heteronormativity. Fandom is its own worst enemy.

    1. The show crashing and burning had nothing to do with Farid. Criticism of a show doesn’t bring down the show but I think the noise actually helps it. If you look at the movie Captain Marvel the negative ranting by fanboys on You Tube did not effect it’s success but actually helped promote it. Personally I would not watch this show. Tyler Posey being cast was a big reason but there were many other reasons. I took a look at the trailer and decided that I cannot relate to characters or the overall look and feel of the show. So the reason the show failed was because people weren’t interested and didn’t like the show.

    2. 1) Now Apocalypse is the literal opposite of queer-positive (“consent is for pussies”, really? That’s just plain disgusting and problematic);
      2) Tyler Posey only makes a small cameo in it, so I really doubt Posey’s brief 5 minutes on-screen appearance is the reason the show tanked;
      3) Dylan O’Brien never talked about his sexuality publicly, nor he ever felt the need to put a label on his sexuality, unlike openly heterosexual man Tyler Posey, who explicitly stated that he identifies as straight more than once, and who claims that actual LGBTQ+ people should be inspired by the fact that he is so comfortable in his heterosexuality that he is willing to “put my tongue down another dude’s throat” in a brief 5 minutes cameo on someone else’s show (and no, there wasn’t any tongue, by the way, it was just a close-mouthed kiss);
      4) There’s nothing wrong with straight actors taking queer roles (or the other way around), of course, but Tyler Posey has a long history of recidive homophobic slurs and behaviour behind him, and he literally admitted that he took a gay role *his glorified cameo in Now Apocalypse* just because he and his girlfriend thought that it would have brought him attention, so people are perfectly entitled to comment on that;

      Now Apocalypse crashed and burned because it was literal TRASH. The acting was objectively atrocious (except for Beau Mirchoff, Kelli Berglund, Roxane Mesquida and RJ Mitte’s, who are the only ones who can act out of the whole cast and deserved WAY better than a crappy, problematic rape-positive parody of a TV show about harmful lgbtq+ caricatures and stereotypes), and the plot non-existent. I think it’s hilarious that rabid Scott/Posey stan user Jeff tried to blame Now Apocalypse being the network’s lowest-rated show for season 2018/2019 on non Scott/Posey fans just because they didn’t suppport Tyler Posey’s 5 minutes of screentime in a poorly written (and acted) 10 episodes show tbh. If Scott/Posey stans didn’t want the show to tank as hard as it did then maybe they should have watched the show and supported their fave’s background cameo instead of screeching and whining and frothing at the mouth in the comments section of an article written by a POC. *shrugs*

    3. @Jeff : Have you seen the show in which DOB plays a ‘queer’ character? Because given what the plot is, it makes perfect sense for a straight guy to play it, given that the role is technically a straight guy.
