Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ Animated Series Is Every Fan’s Daydream

As a long time comic book reader, Marvel’s Disney+ What If…? animated series has me excited. The series, based on the line of comic books by the same name, is being developed for their upcoming Disney+ service. The comic book series was made up of many one-shot comic books in an alternate reality.

The comic book series was narrated by The Watcher and each issue posed the question: what if certain moments in Marvel Comics history didn’t occur as they did in the normal (Marvel-616) continuity? As announced at the Marvel Studios panel during San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the new series will follow the same format as the comic book series with Jeffrey Wright voicing The Watcher. Since the series will put a spin on what we know about the MCU, the series has me excited.

Along with Wright, there will be a lot of actors from the MCU reprising their roles for the series including Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, and many more!

When the series was first announced (during Disney’s Investor Day), Kevin Feige said the first episode of the series would focus on Peggy Carter becoming a superhero with Steve Carter getting a powered suit made by Howard Stark. “What if Peggy Carter was the one who became a super soldier? What if Steve Rogers had stayed a scrawny young kid but joined the fight with an armored suit built by Howard Stark?” Feige said during the event.

The fact that this series takes place outside of normal Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity opens up possibilities. With the addition to Marvel having access to the Fantastic Four and the X-Men line of heroes thanks for their acquisition of Fox, we could see many episodes using those characters. Some of the stories in the issues already already made their way (albeit slightly) into the MCU such as What if the Hulk had the brain of Bruce Banner? and What if Jane Foster had found the hammer of Thor?

While the series may not appeal to some fans of the MCU since it takes place outside of the normal continuity, readers of the comics may like the series since it lets them explore rarer storylines. We will have to wait until the series premieres in Summer of 2021 though to see what events What If? will mess with, and I for one can’t wait!

What events in the MCU would you like to see changed as part of the series? Let us know in the comments!
