Boomerang 2×03 Review: “Don’t Wanna Love You”
This week’s episode of Boomerang Season 2 decided to focus on Tia and David. Both characters tried to address certain issues and from what I could understand, I’m excited to see what kind of narratives they will have in the rest of the episodes.
The first season of Boomerang showed David trying to make sense of his faith and figuring out what the Heavens had planned for him. While David isn’t my favorite character in the cast, I appreciate him being part of the main group because he brings a different perspective.
‘Don’t Wanna Love You’ showed him attending the church of the preacher (played by Jaleel White) he met during the second season’s premiere. Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, but I think something is off about White’s character and it will be interesting to see how he might change David.
The scene where David met ‘religious’ versions of his group of friends was hilarious. Also, I kind of feel for David. I think his friends should try and back off a bit when it comes to his faith. There’s no need to continuously make fun of or throw shade at his beliefs especially when he isn’t harming anybody.
Coming to Tia, her plot dealt with her being paid well for an appearance at a strip club and realizing how the rest of the women weren’t making much. The way the other strippers acted coldly toward Tia was understandable. For them, Tia’s doing everything for clout while the others have to put up with such a job for survival.
Seeing how Tia, as a character, is someone who is all about female empowerment, I wouldn’t be surprised if she decided to start a movement to help women in the stripping profession. The continuing stigma around such a line of work makes no sense to me.
Now that Tia and David got the beginnings of their little arcs, I would like to see what Ari will be up to during this season. With the first season, Waithe and her team did good when it came to portraying a bisexual POC in media. And we all know the world needs more of that, especially when shows like Roswell, New Mexico continue to exist. So, fingers crossed Ari got a well-written arc.
