“Animal Kingdom” Coming to an End at TNT after Sixth Season
It’s official. TNT has decided to renew the highly-enjoyable crime-drama series Animal Kingdom for a sixth and final season. Also, fans can look forward to watching the premiere of Animal Kingdom Season 5 this summer.
If you have been following my Animal Kingdom coverage, you already know I love this series. I’m invested in the main cast of characters. And, of course, the queer representation this show has continued to deliver through Deran Cody, one of the leads, is well-written (considering the crime-centric world he lives in).
While I’m a bit disappointed to learn that Animal Kingdom Season 6 will conclude the current series. I’m not mad at it. In my opinion, it’s always best to finish stories on a high note. And besides, the sixth and final season is currently planned for a 2022 release. So, I have another year of coverage coming your way.
According to Deadline, the cast and crew were notified about the pending pickup back in November. The sixth season will likely begin production in February.
As for the upcoming season 5 of Animal Kingdom, while a specific release date wasn’t shared, the promotional material did tell fans it will debut this summer. So, I guess either May or June? I can’t wait!
The fifth season has Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, and Finn Cole reprising their roles as the Pope, Craig, Deran, and Joshua, respectively. After Smurf’s death, the Cody men are trying to figure out the power dynamics. They have always had trust issues and we know Joshua isn’t above murdering people to get his way. They also have to gather more information about the mysterious Pamela “Pam” Johnson. Even dead, Smurf left drama for her sons and grandson to deal with. Ha!
The upcoming season will also feature flashbacks to 1984, with a 29-year-old Smurf (Leila George) working her way to becoming the Queen of Crime that she was in the show’s present timeline while raising her young twins, Pope and Julia.
We are getting close to queer boy Deran dealing with his sexuality and quite possibly meeting his boyfriend Adrian for the first time during the flashback sequences! I AM SCREAMING!
Having said that, with the series nearing conclusion, I don’t know if any of the main characters will come out alive. Pope has the highest likelihood of dying, in my opinion. Also, I have my fingers crossed that the finale shows Deran going to meet Adrian. But, again, due to the danger our main cast is in, I don’t have high hopes.
According to data shared by Deadline, Animal Kingdom season 4 got 27 million viewers across all platforms. It also ranked among 2019’s top 10 cable dramas (P18-49, L+7, ad-supported cable). I’m telling you, if you haven’t started watching Animal Kingdom yet, you should get on it!
