Historical Vampire Flick “Sinners” Takes a Good Bite of the Box Office!

Sinners movie box office review

The Ryan Coogler-directed and Michael B. Jordan-starring R-rated historical vampire horror movie Sinners managed to debut to a very nice number at the box office.

With Sinners getting an amazing Critic Score (98%) as well as an impressive Audience Score (97%) over on Rotten Tomatoes, I was hoping for it to do well at the box office. Unfortunately, many times a well-written movie fails to make some big bucks in theatres even after a whole lot of praise across the board. So, yay for Sinners debuting atop the box office against the money-making juggernaut that the Minecraft Movie turned out to be. An approximately $45.6 million entrance is another nice feather in Coogler’s hat, considering Sinners is an R-rated offering.

I really enjoyed watching Sinners. There’s so much to discuss about how the narrative featured themes of racism and religion in a genre movie about humans trying to survive a vampire attack. The fact that the story decided to cast Jack O’Connell as the main villain brought in a whole other layer about how the Irish were treated in America and how O’Connell’s Remmick ended up forcing others to be like him.

I also enjoyed the married couple dynamic between Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) and Elijah “Smoke” Moore (Michael B. Jordan). Hailee Steinfeld’s acting range as Mary took me by pleasant surprise. Like, seriously, Sinners is one of the best vampire movies ever made.

With it being the first entry of a possible franchise (I would like a sequel), let’s talk about some facts that might be a bit troublesome. Though the $45.6 million debut is nice, the movie has a reported production budget between $90-100 million. Apparantly, it has to make more than $200 million to break even.

I do want Sinners to succeed, but that break-even number does sound like an uphill battle. We’ll get a better idea of the film’s box office tenure once the second weekend rolls in. But regardless, I highly recommend you go watch Sinners.

As for the rest of the box office, the Minecraft Movie came in at second place with $41.3 million. The live-action/CG adaptation of the iconic video game has gone on to collect more than $720 million at the global box office. It’s a fun movie for what it’s supposed to be.

Animated religious movie The King of Kings came in third with $17.2 million. Starring Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Forest Whitaker, Ben Kingsley, and Oscar Isaac (as Jesus Christ), the film has gone on to collect more than $45 million at the domestic box office.

Snow White is an undeniable disaster for Disney. Who would have thunk? *sarcasm*

The next major live-action adaptation of a classic animated Disney movie is Lilo and Stitch, premiering May 23, 2025. I think it will do incredibly well at the box office. However, personally, having watched the promotional material, there’s just something off about the editing and acting moments.

April 18th – 20th, 2025 Weekend Box Office:

  1. Sinners – $45.6 million
  2. A Minecraft Movie – $41.3 million
  3. The King of Kings – $17.2 million
  4. The Amateur – $7.2 million
  5. Warfare – $4.8 million
  6. Drop – $3.3 million
