Animal Kingdom 3×9 Review: Libertad
‘Libertad’ showed Smurf taking back the reigns of her kingdom as if nothing happened. Her getting out of jail was a surprise for all of the Cody men, and they can’t do anything but watch her regain control.
I was provided a screener for ‘Libertad’ for review. The opinions are my own.
The previous episode showed the Cody men being successful in stealing a lot of money. But with Smurf coming back, the sense of independence they all achieved has begun to dwindle. This is the truest for J. He stood up to Smurf while she was in jail because he let being in charge get to his head. However, with his grandmother back in the house, he has no choice but to make things right and do what she tells him to.
Smurf has a plan and it involves getting the $7 million Lucy stole on the night Baz was killed. I had been waiting for Smurf to go after Lucy and I can’t wait to see how Smurf gets her money back. Also, because she paid Mia to kill Baz (as far we know), I wonder how long she can keep her involvement a secret from Pope and the rest of the Cody men. We still have four more episodes to go. So, a lot can happen.
‘Libertad’ focused a lot on Deran’s relationship with Adrian and Clark. As I have mentioned before, Adrian ended up being totally cool about Deran hooking up with Clark. Adrian understood Deran’s needs when he isn’t around. Clark, on the other hand, is coming across as someone who won’t be down with being in an open relationship. Also, he knows Deran has been lying to him. So, unless Deran tells Clark the truth about his family and Adrian, their relationship isn’t going anywhere.
Do you think Clark will be okay being intimate with Deran when he realizes all of the crimes the Cody family has committed? I’m not sure. But it will be interesting to see what the writers decide to do with the Deran-Adrian-Clark situation.
Kudos to the Animal Kingdom writers for their continued focus on queer representation in a very macho TV series. They even showed Adrian and Deran using protection during their intimate encounter, which is something many shows and movies leave out. Be safe, everyone. Be safe!
Some thoughts and questions
- Will Pope be able to get Lena back from child services if he tells them he’s her real father?
- Why hasn’t Smurf met Lena yet?
- Billy wants his money and I think he’s going to force J to give him his cut.
- I have a feeling Billy’s going to steal from Deran.
- Do you like Deran with Adrian or Clark? How about them being in a thruple?
- Do you think Smurf will be able to kill Lucy?
I enjoyed seeing Smurf return to her kingdom in ‘Libertad,’ and I can’t wait to see what she does next. What did you think of this week’s episode? Feel free to share your thoughts with us.
