Cinephobia Releasing has announced that it will be debuting the queer anti-romcom movie 300 Letters in North America on November 11, 2025.

From writer-director Lucas Santa Ana (Memories of a Teenager), 300 Letters is being described as an anti-romcom queer movie. So, yeah, I’m intrigued by why such a descriptor was used for the film’s marketing campaign.

Apparantly, according to Ray Murray (Cinephobia President), “gay cinema has gotten lazy,” due to going the stereotypical route of showcasing a bunch of “shirtless hunks or twinks”, throwing in sex to “spice it” up, and serving a “familiar storyline.” However, 300 Letters is different because it “boldly breaks the mold” by offering viewers a story that is “a funny, at times painful but expertly-crafted autopsy of a relationship.”

Those are some bold words, Murray. That’s why I hope the hype is worth it once North Americans are able to watch 300 Letters on VOD and digital on November 11, 2025.

The storyline follows Jero (Cristian Mariani) and Tom (Gastón Frías), as a young couple envied by many. But one fateful day, everything changes when Jero comes home to find Tom has abandoned him on their first year anniversary. The only explanation from Tom is a box containing three hundred letters going over every day they saw each other since they met.

Here’s the trailer!

Frankly, having watched the trailer, I don’t know how I feel about such a movie. Like, what do you mean your (ex) boyfriend left you 300 freaking letters to read to figure out why he left you instead of talking things out? It feels like a very passive-aggressive way to mess with your (ex) lover’s state of mind. I get that Tom’s a poet, but come on! Even Jero seems to bring up the fact to a friend about Tom leaving him “with a performance!”

Also, I could be wrong here, but there seems to be a scene where the two talk on the phone with Tom asking Jero if he has finished reading the letters he wrote.

The emotional attack. I’m so frustrated!

Jero would have been better off burning the letters unopened the moment he realized what Tom was up to.

I love romantic comedies and breakup movies, and I wanted to combine them while also talking about something that interests me within the LGBT world,” shared Lucas Santa Ana. “We always talk about the discrimination we suffer from outsiders, but we rarely think about the discrimination we inflict on ourselves due to the prejudices we carry. In 300 Letters, I wanted to explore this topic with a fun and relaxed perspective.”

I don’t didn’t see the “fun and relaxed perspective” in the trailer!

300 Letters had a world premiere at the 2025 Roze Filmdagen Film Festival. The US Premiere was at the Wicked Queer: Boston’s LGBTQ+ Film Festival. It’s screened at tons of festivals, including Frameline San Francisco, Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ+ Film Festival, and FilmOut San Diego. The movie has met a warm reception. So, there might be something to the narrative instead of the frustration the trailer caused for me.
