Queer Dramatic Comedy “Unconventional” Gets Trailer and February Release!

Queer dramatic comedy series Unconventional from creator and writer Kit Williamson has released an official trailer as it gets ready to premiere on Revry come February 11, 2025.
I have been looking forward to what Williamson has to offer through Unconventional since I first talked about the project back in *checks notes* June 0f 2020. So, yeah, you can tell I’m glad that the live-action series is actually going to be shared with the world soon.
Williamson, of EastSiders fame, knows how to strike the right cords when balancing comedy with queer narratives that resonate with many. In short, he knows how to do queer dramedy and Unconventional seems it will be no different as it tells the story of queer siblings, both in their 30s, trying to answer some important questions about their lives moving forward.
Set in Palm Springs and the high desert of Joshua Tree, we have PhD student Noah Guillory (Williamson) who has been married for 10 years to his husband Dan (James Bland). They plan to adopt, however, they are also considering experimenting with their domestic life. So the two agree to bring in a third and see how that goes for them. According to the trailer, Noah also has depression and anxiety.
Frankly (judging from what was shown in the official trailer), I’m glad Unconventional had the married queer couple decide together to bring a third person into their marriage instead of featuring the stereotypical cheating trope or having one of the spouses go along with the idea of a third to please their “better half” even when their heart wasn’t into it. The person in question, being asked to link up with the spouses, happens to be played by actor Constantine Rousouli.
As far as the sister is concerned, we have Margot (Aubrey Shea). Noah is the sperm donor to Margot’s wife Eliza (Briana Venskus). Margot, who is bipolar, seems to be dealing with issues regarding her marriage as well as her medications. Fingers crossed the med-centric plotthread isn’t stereotypical.
I just have a thing when it comes to the portrayal of mental health in media especially because I work in healthcare.
Anyway, more drama is caused by the duo’s conservative mother Carolyn (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson) moving from Texas to California after an unexpected tragedy. Apparantly, she’s not going to be very happy about her married gay son inviting another man into his marriage. I don’t blame her. The concept of a married couple being in a throuple, regardless of their sexuality, can be a lot even for the most open-minded of parents.
Now, I get that certain viewers might roll their eyes at seeing a married gay couple wanting to be in a throuple or an “open relationship” instead of the show depicting monogamous husbands. But hey, to be fair, the show is called Unconventional.
The cast also includes Beau Bridges as the siblings’ estranged father Wayne, Kathy Griffin, Tuc Watkins, Jenna Ushkowitz, Constantine Rousouli, Laith Ashley, Willam, Beth Grant, Stephen Guarino, John Halbach, James Urbaniak, and more.
Due to the unfortunate trend of entertainment companies ditching queer representation and other political decisions being made, the world needs more queer stories. So yay to Unconventional and Williamson (who has a Patreon) doing their part.
Debuting February 11, 2025, new episodes of the nine-episode long season will air weekly on Revry. Each episode will cover a month of Eliza’s pregnancy.
