The upcoming queer horror comedy film Summoning Sylvia will have its nationwide theatrical release come March 31, 2023, followed by a VOD and Digital release on April 7, 2023. The film is about a group of queer friends who end up summoning actual spirits!

Written and directed by Wesley Taylor (Smash, The Spongebob Musical) and Alex Wyse (Marvel’s Iron Fist), Summoning Sylvia will be released by The Horror Collective. The premise deals with a gay bachelor party taking a turn for the worst due to a seance gone wrong.

The film is about Larry, who gets “kidnapped” by his three best friends for what’s supposed to be an awesome bachelor weekend getaway at a haunted house. Once there, our gaggle of gays ends up learning about a 100-year-old legend about a murderous woman named Sylvia. Apparently, she killed her son and buried him somewhere underneath the house’s floorboards. I have a feeling she murdered her son because he was queer.

But anyway, Larry’s got “real” issues to deal with. He’s supposed to be bonding with his “hetero” brother-in-law Harrison. So, Larry invites Harrison over to the haunted house without running the new invite by his friends. And, of course, things get out of hand due to a seance that’s supposed to summon Sylvia.

I don’t know about you, but I did find myself laughing at a couple of scenes featured in the trailer. This actually looks like a queer horror comedy that’s silly enough to be really fun.

The cast of Summoning Sylvia includes Travis Coles (Superstore), Michael Urie (Younger), Frankie Grande (Henry Danger), Nicholas Logan (I Care a Lot), Troy Iwata (Dash & Lily), Noah Ricketts (American Gods), Sean Grandillo (Scream: The TV Series), Camden Garcia (Station 19), and Veanne Cox (You’ve Got Mail) as the titular specter.

Coming in at approximately 74 minutes, the film has been Rated R for sexual content and language.

As far as my opinion goes, I’m all for more queer horror comedy content!
