Queer Talent and Content Get Major SAG 2025 Award Nominations!
The nominations for the upcoming Screen Actors Guild awards have been released and a bunch of queer talent and queer content made the list. The 31st SAG Awards will be presented on February 23, 2025, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.
Actress Kristen Bell has been called up again to host the ceremony. This will be Bell’s second time hosting the event since the 24th ceremony. The event can be viewed live on Netflix at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT. Take note; Jane Fonda’s the the SAG Life Achievement Honoree.
The current noms were supposed to be announced live in-person but were instead done so via press release and the award’s official website. For those who might not be aware, the initial plan was canceled due to the wildfires in Southern California.
Let’s go over the SAG 2025 nominations along with some of my opinions.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role
- Adrien Brody – The Brutalist as László Tóth
- Timothée Chalamet – A Complete Unknown as Bob Dylan
- Daniel Craig – Queer as William Lee
- Colman Domingo – Sing Sing as John “Divine G” Whitfield
- Ralph Fiennes – Conclave as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence
Opinion: Even though Craig being nominated for Queer acknowledges a queer movie, I haven’t seen a lot of hype around the project. I do feel Brody will end up winning this one. Brody recently won the 2025 Golden Globe.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role
- Pamela Anderson – The Last Showgirl as Shelly
- Cynthia Erivo – Wicked as Elphaba
- Karla Sofía Gascón – Emilia Pérez as Emilia Pérez
- Mikey Madison – Anora as Anora “Ani” Mikheeva
- Demi Moore – The Substance as Elisabeth Sparkle
Opinion: Wicked fans are happy to see Erivo being recognized. However, I don’t see her winning. It’s also nice to see Anderson being on the list. Moore won a 2025 Golden Globe. So, we might get a repeat of that. Interestingly, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman weren’t nominated for Maria and Babygirl, respectively. Hmmm.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role
- Jonathan Bailey – Wicked as Fiyero
- Yura Borisov – Anora as Igor
- Kieran Culkin – A Real Pain as Benji Kaplan
- Edward Norton – A Complete Unknown as Pete Seeger
- Jeremy Strong – The Apprentice as Roy Cohn
Opinion: Look at Bailey being nominated! But I think it’s going to be between Culkin and Strong.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
- Monica Barbaro – A Complete Unknown as Joan Baez
- Jamie Lee Curtis – The Last Showgirl as Annette
- Danielle Deadwyler – The Piano Lesson as Berniece
- Ariana Grande – Wicked as Glinda
- Zoe Saldaña – Emilia Pérez as Rita Mora Castro
Opinion: I do feel Grande was a co-lead with Erivo but what can you do? I think Saldaña might win this after having won during the 2025 Golden Globes.
Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture
- Anora
- A Complete Unknown
- Conclave
- Emilia Pérez
- Wicked
Opinion: I would like to see Wicked winning this one.
Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture
- Deadpool & Wolverine
- Dune: Part Two
- The Fall Guy
- Gladiator II
- Wicked
Opinion: Yay to SAG recognizing stunt work. More awards need to do the same. I wouldn’t be surprised if Deadpool & Wolverine wins.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
- Javier Bardem – Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (Netflix) as José Menendez
- Colin Farrell – The Penguin (HBO) as Oswald “Oz” Cobb / The Penguin
- Richard Gadd – Baby Reindeer (Netflix) as Donny Dunn
- Kevin Kline – Disclaimer (Apple TV+) as Stephen Brigstocke
- Andrew Scott – Ripley (Netflix) as Tom Ripley
Opinion: Yeah, certain people are not happy about Bardem being nominated over Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander. Their careers could have benefited from such nominations. As for who will win, Farrell won over Gadd at the 2025 Golden Globes. So, he might just win again.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series
- Kathy Bates – The Great Lillian Hall (HBO) as Edith Wilson
- Cate Blanchett – Disclaimer (Apple TV+) as Catherine Ravenscroft
- Jodie Foster – True Detective: Night Country (HBO) as Chief Liz Danvers
- Lily Gladstone – Under the Bridge (Hulu) as Cam Bentland
- Jessica Gunning – Baby Reindeer (Netflix) as Martha Scott
- Cristin Milioti – The Penguin (HBO) as Sofia Falcone
Opinion: Yay to Gladstone being nominated. But, yeah, just give it to Foster. True Detective: Night Country was so good!
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
- Tadanobu Asano – Shōgun (FX) as Kashigi Yabushige
- Jeff Bridges – The Old Man (FX) as Dan Chase
- Gary Oldman – Slow Horses (Apple TV+) as Jackson Lamb
- Eddie Redmayne – The Day of the Jackal (Peacock) as Jackal
- Hiroyuki Sanada – Shōgun (FX) as Lord Yoshii Toranaga
Opinion: Give it to Sanada. No need to question it.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
- Kathy Bates – Matlock (CBS) as Madeline “Matty” Matlock / Madeline Kingston
- Nicola Coughlan – Bridgerton (Netflix) as Penelope Bridgerton
- Allison Janney – The Diplomat (Netflix) as Grace Penn
- Keri Russell – The Diplomat (Netflix) as Katherine “Kate” Wyler
- Anna Sawai – Shōgun (FX) as Toda Mariko
Opinion: Congrats to Coughlan for getting nominated. But the award should go to Sawai.
Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series
- Adam Brody – Nobody Wants This (Netflix) as Noah Roklov
- Ted Danson – A Man on the Inside (Netflix) as Charles Nieuwendyk
- Harrison Ford – Shrinking (Apple TV+) as Dr. Paul Rhoades
- Martin Short – Only Murders in the Building (Hulu) as Oliver Putnam
- Jeremy Allen White – The Bear (FX / Hulu) as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto
Opinion: Whether or not The Bear should be considered a “comedy” continues.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series
- Kristen Bell – Nobody Wants This (Netflix) as Joanne
- Quinta Brunson – Abbott Elementary (ABC) as Janine Teagues
- Liza Colón-Zayas – The Bear (FX / Hulu) as Tina Marrero
- Ayo Edebiri – The Bear (FX / Hulu) as Sydney Adamu
- Jean Smart – Hacks (Max) as Deborah Vance
Opinion: I would like to see Brunson win.
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series
- Bridgerton (Netflix)
- The Day of the Jackal (Peacock)
- The Diplomat (Netflix)
- Shōgun (FX)
- Slow Horses (Apple TV+)
Opinion: Shōgun has to win this!
Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series
- Abbott Elementary (ABC)
- The Bear (FX / Hulu)
- Hacks (Max)
- Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)
- Shrinking (Apple TV+)
Opinion: I love the Abbott Elementary cast!
Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series
- The Boys (Prime Video)
- Fallout (Prime Video)
- House of the Dragon (HBO)
- The Penguin (HBO)
- Shōgun (FX)
Opinion: I would be happy to see any of these stunt departments winning.
