“Suicide Squad Isekai” Anime Announced at Anime Expo 2023!
Iconic characters from DC Comics are getting the anime treatment. Warner Bros. Japan LLC announced at Anime Expo 2023 that an original anime titled Suicide Squad Isekai is currently in production!
The news was shared during a panel presented by Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio (Spy x Family). A teaser trailer and promotional art were also released to excite the fandom. And from what I tell, it worked. There are already a lot of opinions about this anime on Twitter.
Suicide Squad Isekai will be directed by Eri Osada. The screenplay is by Tappei Nagatsuki (Re-Zero – Starting Life in Another World) and Eiji Umehara (Vivy – Fluorite Eye’s Song). The music is by Kenichiro Suehiro.
The announcement teaser art that features Harley Quinn is by manga artist Akira Amano (REBORN!).
While details about the plot are scarce, the teaser trailer makes it clear that Harley Quinn and the Joker, while spreading havoc in Gotham, somehow find themselves in a fantastical world filled with dragons, ogres, and more.
I do like the animation style!
Now I get that certain fans think the teaser is focusing too much on the duo. However, with Amanda Waller also making an appearance, I think other characters will be involved to showcase why the upcoming anime includes the term ‘Suicide Squad’ in the title. Though I won’t be surprised if Harley and Joker are clearly the leads.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but one of the pins Harley’s wearing in the promotional art looks like Peacemaker’s helmet. And I think the other pin is supposed to be for Deathshot.
And to certain people who are rolling their eyes at the premise of the show, I mean, do you not read DC comic books at all? In a way, a bunch of comic book stories already fall under the Isekai genre. So, Harley and the Joker finding themselves in a very different world isn’t a stretch at all. Such things happen in comics a lot.
Now, whether or not the anime will remember that Harley Quinn is supposed to be a queer character remains to be seen.
While you wait, if you are into the anime vibe, I recommend checking out My Adventures with Superman. The new series will release on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at midnight on Adult Swim. Having watched some of the screeners, all I will say is that it’s so good!
