HBO’s mega-hit The Last of Us season one is coming to 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on July 18, 2023. And yes, the upcoming home release includes hours of extra features for fans to enjoy!

As someone who has played The Last of Us video game series, I’m so glad that the live-action adaptation was able to find an audience. We all know that the track record of video to live-action adaptations isn’t great. And to top it off, the show is very queer. So, yay!

The Last of Us season one didn’t just do well, it did great, marking HBO’s second-largest debut, behind only House of the Dragon. The season one finale saw a 75% audience increase! And yes, the show has already been renewed for a second season.

Fans can go ahead can buy The Last of Us: The Complete First Season on 4K UHD for $49.99 USD ($54.97 CAD), on Blu-ray for $44.98 USD ($49.99 CAD), and on DVD for $39.99 USD ($44.98 CAD) come July 18, 2023. Take note; the series will be available to purchase digitally on April 11, 2023. The SD version will cost you $19.99 USD ($24.99 CAD) while the HD version will be $24.99 USD ($29.99 CAD).

From the press release I received, digital purchase is available right now in Canada.

Starring Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Anna Torv, and more, the synopsis for the show reads:

The Last of Us takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

The show is based on the game of the same name by Naughty Dog. It has been written and executive produced by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us franchise and Naughty Dog Co-President). The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and is executive produced by Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Rose Lam. The Production companies are PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog.

As for fans who are interested in the soundtrack, it is currently available everywhere and features an original score by 2-time Academy Award winner Gustavo Santaolalla (who worked on the two video games) and David Fleming. The album also includes Nick Offerman’s cover of Linda Ronstadt’s “Long Long Time” and Jessica Mazin’s cover of Depeche Mode’s “Never Let Me Down Again.”

The Special Features include:

We are fans of The Last of Us live-action series on The Geekiary. You can read Micah’s episode reviews for the first season here. The series debuted on January 15, 2023, with the finale airing on March 12, 2023.

Considering how divisive The Last of Us 2 video game ended up being, I’m looking forward to seeing how the creative team will translate that particular narrative to live-action.

Are you excited about owning The Last of Us in a physical medium?
