Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Primal” Season 3 Coming to Adult Swim

After the very shocking season 2 finale of Primal, fans will be glad to know that the brutal animated series will continue. We don’t have an exact premiere date yet, but Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal season 3 is happening!

Announced during Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal season 3 will air on Adult Swim soon. The show has been produced by Cartoon Network Studios and has gone on to win five Emmy Awards including “Outstanding Program”. The third season is currently in production. And yes, creator Genndy Tartakovsky is returning, too.

The premise of Primal followed the unexpected friendship that formed between a caveman named Spear and a female T-rex named Fang. The two faced a whole lot of trouble as they journeyed through perilous lands. The narrative, which featured the two leads not having actual dialogue, focused a lot on tragedy and emotional bonds.

The 10-episode-long first season premiered back in October 2019. The second season, also 10 episodes long, premiered in July 2022 and brought along a very shocking finale. And while it hinted at a continuation of the series, fans weren’t really sure if it would actually happen. Well, it turns out, that Primal will indeed stay.

“It’s happening!! ‘Primal’ has become a contagious disease that I don’t ever want to cure. Every episode flows out like an unstoppable force beyond my control. Prepare yourselves ‘Primal’ fans for Season 3 is coming!!!” shared an excited Tartakovsky.

Michael Outweleen, President of Adult Swim, acknowledged how tough it can be to continue a beloved series after killing a main character. However, the creative team is confident they can offer fans an interesting story.

Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios shared, “When Genndy says he is not finished with ‘Primal,’ our only job is to do everything possible to support that vision and give him the opportunity to tell more incredible and imaginative stories. I can’t wait to see where he takes us next.”

For those who might now know, Spear succumbed to his wounds in the season 2 finale. However, he was able to live on, in a way, after fathering a daughter with Mira. So, season 3 of Primal will likely focus on Mira as well as Fang’s little dinosaur babies.

A very short teaser video for the upcoming season displayed the words, “Something has entered the blood, like a whisper of unnamed evil.” The fandom is already trying to decipher what such a line actually means and how it will relate to the story of Spear’s daughter and Fang’s children.

While fans wait for Primal season 3, they can go ahead and watch Tartakovsky’s newest animated series Unicorn: Warriors Eternal.

Way different from Primal, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal has been described as a steampunk fantasy tale that follows a team of heroes who reawaken throughout eternity to fight an ominous force. The show debuted on Adult Swim this May. Lasting for 10 episodes, the season one finale will air on June 30, 2023. Having watched the premiere, at this point, I’m waiting to binge-watch the rest of the season to determine what I really thought of said show.
