“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” 4K UHD Blu-ray Combo Pack Review

The Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire 4K UHD Blu-ray Combo Pack features quite a bit of enjoyable extra content to help amplify the fun of watching the actual movie.

I was provided the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire 4K UHD Blu-ray Combo Pack for free for review by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The opinions I have shared are my own.

I already reviewed the actual movie. So, I won’t be going over it again in this particular post. To summarize, I found Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire to be a serviceable family-friendly action-horror film that could have been so much better with a tighter narrative and longer runtime.

However, having said that, I have to share that I enjoyed this particular film a lot more during my rewatch via the home release. I think it might be due to how I had accepted Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire for what it was and already knew about the level of content it would deliver.

From director Gil Kenan, who co-wrote the movie with Jason Reitman, the cast includes Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Kumail Nanjiani along with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts, as the narrative brings the OG characters back to lend a hand to the latest generation of Ghostbusters against an ancient evil.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire went on to make just a bit north of $200 million against a reported production budget of $100 million. Initially, there were plans for a third movie in the reboot/continuation of the IP, but let’s see how that pans out down the line.

Coming to the 4K UHD Blu-ray Combo Pack, the front of the cover had the main cast standing in front of a frozen city with the back of the box featuring the cast again along with a list of the bonus material you can enjoy.

Taking the plastic 4K UHD and Blu-ray cover out from the sleeve, you’ll get to see the same imagery on the plastic disc cover.

Opening the cover revealed two discs. I wasn’t expecting the discs to have different artwork. The Blu-ray showcased a single Stay-Puft Marshmallow while the 4K Ultra HD disc showcased the Sewer Dragon. Even though the artwork was a nice surprise, I have to say that I was surprised not to see the main villain Garraka on one of the discs.

As far as the quality is concerned, I didn’t experience any issues with the video quality on both the Blu-ray release as well as the 4K UHD release. The visuals were bright and crisp. Scenes shot in a darker setting came across quite clearly (for example, certain scenes in the research center and most of the moments between Phoebe and Melody). I liked the visual presentation of the freezing effect once Garrake decided to get a bit serious with his powers against the heroes.

The same level of quality held true for the audio. I didn’t experience any interruptions in the audio delivery across the approximate 115-minute runtime. From the soundtrack to the dialogue and action-centric audio, everything was presented well.

As for the bonus content, let’s go over the list!

• Deleted & Extended Scenes (approx 9 minutes) – The scenes don’t add anything impactful to the overall story. But I think it’s still when home releases come with deleted content.

• Easter Eggs Unleashed (approx 6 minutes) – Get to know about the hidden and not-so-hidden Easter Eggs scattered throughout the movie.
• Return to the Firehouse: Making Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (approx 22 minutes) – You get a behind-the-scenes look at how such a story came to be along with the opinions of the cast and crew about returning for a sequel to an iconic franchise.
• Busted: Capturing the Ghosts of Frozen Empire (approx 11 minutes) – A look at the ghost creation process for this movie.
• Manifesting Garraka (approx 4 minutes) – This featurette did nothing to add layers to an undercooked villain such as Garraka.
• New York, New Gear (approx 7 minutes) – A lot at the props.
• Welcome to the Paranormal Discovery Center (approx 5 minutes) – How the discovery center was used to expand the worldbuilding.
• Knowing the Score (approx 6 minutes)
• Audio commentary with director and co-writer Gil Kenan – Get to hear Kenan talk about his inspiration behind telling such a story, the required collaborative process, being a fan of Ghostbusters, why certain narrative choices were made, etc. Frankly, I want every home release for a movie to come with audio commentary. It helps with replayability and adds value to the money you spend to buy said disc.
