Boruto: Naruto Next Generations 1×33 Review: The Super Beast Scroll Slump

Super Beast Scroll Slump review boruto anime episode 33
Inojin, Boruto, and Himawari in ‘The Super Beast Scroll Slump’

This week’s episode of the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime finally made me want to write about it. Titled ‘The Super Beast Scroll Slump,’ the episode focused on Inojin realizing how his ninjutsu is supposed to work.

I had high hopes for the arc where Boruto and his classmates went on a school trip to the Hidden Mist Village. However, the premise quickly got boring due to a slow pace and an uninteresting plot. There were some cool fighting scenes involving Boruto and Salad near the end, but the arc wasn’t something I wanted to write about.

Now our little heroes are back in their village and I’m looking forward to their new adventures. ‘The Super Beast Scroll Slump’ shone some light on Inojin’s character. We don’t get to see him much in the manga. So, it was fun to have him being fleshed out in the anime.

Trying to be more efficient with his Super Beast Imitating Drawing technique, Inojin decided to make copies of his creations. It was obvious that taking such a shortcut wasn’t going to work. Not only were the copies unable to retain their shape for long, soon Inojin couldn’t bring them to life.

Inojin’s frustration made sense. It was further fueled by Sai’s unwillingness to directly help his son and Himawari’s art winning a local contest. ‘The Super Beast Scroll Slump,’ also helped Inojin deal with his ego. He’s an amazing artist, there’s no doubt about it. However, his artistic skills also made him too critical toward drawings that other people made.

The comment he shared about Himawari winning a contest because she’s Naruto’s daughter felt way too real and linked to how offspring of people in power seem to have things handed to them in the society we live in.

Later he realized that Himawari drew from her heart. She didn’t care if her art was perfect. She drew what she wanted and remembered to have fun. Inojin used to draw with emotion as well, however, he began to suppress his feelings with time and began drawing with no real sentiment behind his strokes. Being indifferent to his own work was what led to him being unable to use his father’s technique.

I really liked the scenes where Inojin put his ego aside and went to Himawari for help. I hope the anime continues with such episodes, focusing on Boruto’s classmates and allowing them to be more layered.

‘The Super Beast Scroll Slump,’ was a very fun episode even if it was predictable. Also, any episode that has Chocho being comfortable with her amazing self is a must-see. Even if she’s comedic relief, the writers have made that little girl wise beyond her years.
