Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 1 and 2 Coming to DVD
Mark your calendars, Voltron fans. Netflix’s popular Voltron: Legendary Defender – a reboot of the 1980s cartoon Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which is in itself a reboot of the Japanese Beast King GoLion – will be coming to DVD for the first time.
Den of Geek announced the news earlier today. Voltron: Legendary Defender seasons 1 and 2 will be available on DVD June 12. The DVD set will feature all 26 episodes in the first two seasons…and nothing else. Yes, apparently this an episode-only release with absolutely no special features or behind-the-scenes content.
You may have heard me say this before, but I believe that all DVDs (and now Blu-rays) should come with a certain list of special features (FYI, it’s deleted scenes, gag reel, and actor commentary). To have absolutely no extra content is disappointing, to say the least. Voltron has a fairly large and active fanbase, and speaking as a member of the fandom, we totally lap up any and all bonus content that we come across. Fans would kill for interviews, featurettes, and commentary, among a whole host of other things, and not having anything extra makes you wonder if the DVD is worth the price tag. At $22.98, it’s on the lower end of the price range when you’re buying TV seaons, but considering all you get are the episodes – and those episodes are already available on Netflix – it might make people second guess a purchase.
Of course, if you’re a fan of Voltron: Legendary Defender, you may want to think about purchasing the DVD set regardless. If this volume does poorly, it may make Universal (or DreamWorks or whoever handles the DVD licensing and distribution) think that there’s no point in releasing any of the other seasons on DVD. If they never release the other seasons on DVD, then there is really no chance of ever getting any special features.
It’s a conundrum. On the one hand, I’m beyond happy that Voltron is finally coming to DVD. On the other hand, I wish they were giving us something – anything – additional to look forward to with this release.
What do you guys think? Will you be purchasing the DVD set anyway? What special features do you wish they would include?
