Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom To Chomp Down On $144 Million Opening Weekend!
The box office estimates are in and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (or Jurassic World 2) is ready to take a bite worth $144 million during its debut weekend from 4,475 North American locations! Cue T-rex roar?
While a drop from the opening numbers delivered by its predecessor, Jurassic World 2 is still going to make a lot of money. A third film in the series is a safe bet for Universal-Amblin Entertainment at this point even though the current Rotten Tomatoes score wants any new installments to go extinct.
Jurassic World 2 opened with $54 million on Friday. This includes the $15.3 million it was able to hunt down during Thursday night previews. The current $144 million is more than the earlier $130 million to $140 million projections for the sequel which boasts an approximately $187 million production budget.
The overseas gross currently stands at $466 million from 51 international markets with China bringing in more than $170 million. The dinosaur-disaster flick was even able to hold off Incredibles 2 in China at the box office even with a 73% drop.
Jurassic World 2 has been directed by J.A. Bayona from a script by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. Trevorrow also executive produced the sequel with Steven Spielberg.
Comparatively, Jurassic World opened back in 2015 with $208.8 million and roared its way to earning $1.7 billion worldwide during its run. If the current estimates hold, the sequel is likely to cross the $1 billion mark, too.
Coming to the rest of the box office results, Disney-Pixar’s Incredibles 2 (after having a record opening) will take second place with $79 million from 4,410 US theaters. Ocean’s 8 keeps making money, falling to third place with an estimated $11 million and a possible domestic haul of more than $103 million.
Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story will battle it out to secure fifth place on the weekend chart behind Tag. The worldwide gross for Deadpool 2 stands at $693.9 million. The possible Disney/Fox merger (now worth more than $71.3 billion) will decide the fate of the Ryan Reynolds starring property.
As of yet, Solo has made $346.4 million worldwide. The performance of the latest Star Wars title has got the higher ups rethinking how to proceed with the franchise. According to rumors (which could very well be true?), while Kathleen Kennedy and co. still aren’t too worried about the growing anger in certain parts of the Star Wars fandom, Disney has put its foot down (imagine a very angry Mickey Mouse) and wants the people involved to reassess the situation because the Star Wars film franchise needs to make money.
Anyway, make sure to read Tara’s review of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. I had a lot of issues with it.
