Go Big or Go Homeworld: Cartoon Network at SDCC 2018
San Diego Comic-Con has played host to some great Cartoon Network panels and events the past few years, but for SDCC 2018, Cartoon Network is going BIG.
Steven Universe fans will surely be excited about all of the awesome things Cartoon Network has planned for the show. While the main panel won’t take place until Saturday morning at 10 AM (in the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront, as usual), they are bringing “an out-of-this-world fan experience…with an overall immersive Steven Universe experience” to Comic-Con.
Before I delve into all of the awesome SU offerings that I’m so excited for, it’s worth mentioning that they will also be paying homage to Adventure Time (including with one last SDCC Adventure Time panel on Friday at 10 AM in the Indigo Ballroom), as well as featuring other shows like Unikitty! and DC Super Hero Girls. There will be panels and exclusive merchandise, of course, and to top it all off Cartoon Network is working with the Her Universe Fashion Show to present a Junior Designer Showcase on Thursday at 6 PM in the Harbor Ballroom of the Manchester Grand Hyatt, as well as hosting the “Best Summer Ever Costume Ball” on Sunday from 11:30 AM to 1 PM (again in the Indigo Ballroom). This party will feature costume judging by Cartoon Network stars, games, and never-before-seen clips from Cartoon Network shows. (Honestly, reading about it almost makes me sad that I’m an adult and not traveling with any kids…*almost*.)
Again, though, I’m most excited about all of the SDCC 2018 Steven Universe offerings. Cartoon Network’s booth – #3735 – will feature “large, iconic figures of the Crystal Gems above a crystal landscape”, and a screen embedded in the crystal will give a peek at what happens inside – the chance to be in an “epic parallax scene” with your favorite characters! And in addition to the Saturday morning panel, on Thursday July 19th, Estelle, Rebecca Sugar, and representatives from the Dove Self-Esteem Project are gathering at the Horton Grand Theater at 4:30 PM for “a conversation about the importance of inclusion and body positivity”.
Of course there will be plenty of exclusive merchandise, including Adventure Time and Powerpuff Girls items, but again, Cartoon Network is going all out with Steven Universe, with a special SU sketchbook, an adorable Steven-as-Cookie-Cat t-shirt, and a slough of brand-new plushies: Lars of the Stars, Yellow Diamond, Blue Diamond, Pink Diamond, Sparkle Cookie Cat, Peridot, Night Lion, and Sitting Pink Lion. I for one am torn about what I want more…the Cookie Cat t-shirt or a stuffed Night Lion!
