Geekiary News Briefs: Miley Cyrus Backlash About Sexuality! Todrick Hall Accusations! And More!

Welcome to the latest Geekiary News Briefs! I’ve got a whole lot of drama to share with you all. Not only did Miley Cyrus face backlash due to her comments on queer sexuality, but Todrick Hall (allegedly) hasn’t been paying employees and is into sexual assault. I know! Messy!

Of course, I’ll begin with the latest box office results. While Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (which we have reviewed) debuted at the top, it was only able to gross $36.9 million during the weekend. That’s just not good. I think Disney’s plan to promote it as a Halloween movie just didn’t work in the studio’s favor. However, with a reported production budget of $185 million, I think Maleficent 2 will be able to turn a profit. So, at least, that’s some good news for fans.

The highly-enjoyable Zombieland 2: Double Tap (which we have also reviewed) didn’t perform well either, and came in at $26.8 million. While I’m not sure what happened there, some critics think the fact the main cast is all white might have played a role in not attracting a diverse (and bigger) audience in 2019.

Talking about movies, the final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been released. I’ve already done a reaction and breakdown of it. The video is basically me counting all of the Finn x Poe (Stormpilot) scenes. Disney is clearly queerbaiting the audience with those two! The upcoming Star Wars installment will be released in the US on December 20, 2019.

Now, let’s talk about the drama!

So, Miley Cyrus (because I mean, she’s Miley Cyrus) decided to make certain comments about her sexuality and offered some advice to others.

During the live stream, according to Buzzfeed, Cyrus said:

“Don’t give up. You don’t have to be gay, there are good people with dicks out there, you just gotta find them. You just gotta find a dick that’s not a dick, you know what I mean? […] I always thought I had to be gay, because I just thought all guys are evil, but that’s not true. There are good people out there that just happen to have dicks. I’ve only ever met one, and he’s on this live.”

Like, what the heck?

Cyrus’ words, of course, got a reaction online. I don’t know about you, but what she said does feed the problematic notion of how queer people, especially queer women (more specifically, lesbians), can be turned straight if they find the right man.

Cyrus did head to Twitter to clear some stuff up.

We have to consider the fact she’s part of the queer community when handling this situation. And I think this was an example of her saying something without realizing the full impact of her words. I hope she learns and grows from this experience.

Moving on!

Multi-talented Todrick Hall seems to be facing a lot of heat. Due to the entire situation having a whole lot of ‘allegedly’ involved, I’m just going to share a few tweets. Queerty wrote about it. As did Pride.

I don’t want to say or imply something that isn’t true. So, make what you can of these receipts.

There are people online defending Hall, while some are saying they already knew he was shady and problematic.

As far as I can tell, Hall has yet to issue an actual reply to all of the current allegations.
