Breaking Glass Pictures is all set to release the queer romance drama film Barrio Boy on December 12, 2023. The upcoming movie will explore themes of sexuality, race, gender, and more in the Latine community.

I’m all for queer movies that feature different perspectives because a person’s journey toward queer self-acceptance can vary depending on the communities they belong to. That’s one of the reasons I’m looking forward to watching Barrio Boy. Though the trailer shows our lead character experiencing certain obstacles, I think this is going to be a queer movie with a happy ending. So, yay!

Written and directed by Dennis Shinners, the narrative follows Quique (Dennis Garcia), a Nuyorican barber, who finds himself catching feelings for an Irish man named Kevin (James Physick). Set during a summer in Brooklyn, Quique finds himself dealing with a whole lot due to being raised in a very macho-centric community and wanting to be true to himself.

Quique and Kevin’s close friendship gives rise to suspicious looks and chatter in the neighborhood, with Quique’s childhood friend turned local bully Cuz (Keet Davis) having certain opinions about the entire thing. Quique seems to have some support from Rafa (Pierre Jean Gonzalez). So, at least, that’s good.

Here’s the trailer!

Quique’s journey will explore themes of sexuality, family dynamics, friendship, race, and class. With the trailer showing him going to a gay bar and visiting some kind of establishment with a Brooklyn Pride poster on the wall, I’m rooting for him. I don’t know if he will end up with Kevin. But I think the movie will conclude on a happy note.

For those who might know, the feature-length film is based on a short of the same name. The said short was written and directed by Shinners and had Garcia playing the lead role as well.

The news about the film selling the North American rights to Breaking Glass Pictures was shared back in May of this year by Screen Daily.
