Dragon Ball Daima 1×15 and 1 x 16 Review: “Third Eye” and “Degesu”

Dragon Ball Daima season 1 episode 15, ‘Third Eye’, and episode 16, ‘Degesu’, were all about Goku and his friends trying to defeat King Gomah’s army. We also got answers to a few lore-specific questions.
With the Z-Warriors having made it to the First Demon Realm in the previous episode, they get immediately attacked by King Gomah’s army. I was expecting Goku and the rest to make quick work of the red shirts, but I was surprised when the army was able to give them a tough time. It wasn’t because the fodder was strong. It’s just that the sheer number and using weapons capable of neutralizing the Z-Warriors was a bigger threat than expected. Goku and his crew couldn’t just face the army head-on. Vegeta even asked Goku for an energy-restoring bug after getting hit by a couple of shots.
Things got more serious when the army pulled up with tanks that could really do a number on the Saiyans and Piccolo with a single hit. I liked how the writers handled the confrontation. Goku and the other characters were impossible to defeat in a competition of sheer strength. So, swarming such OP opponents like ants while firing body-numbing energy weapons was a good strategy.
The much-needed help came in the form of Panzy’s father arriving at the perfect moment to turn the tides of war for our heroes. With reinforcements also wielding energy-based weapons, the Z-Warriors finally defeated the horde of enemies. Once done, they made their way to King Gomah’s castle to save Dende and collect the First Demon World’s Dragon Ball.
A major revelation in ‘Third Eye’ was about… the Third Eye. Viewers already knew the eyeball on Hybis’s belt was something important from episode 9. And we got to learn that it was indeed the Third Eye, aka the Tertian Occulus. According to the lore, the Demon Realm Kings wore the Third Eye on their forehead to grant themselves immense magical power.
King Abura had the powerful eye stolen from him due to the betrayal by his son King Dabura a long time ago. King Dabura had ordered one of his minions to take the eye to the Third Demon Realm, but once there the minion got killed and the eye was lost. Said event didn’t matter to King Dabura because he was able to overthrow his father and take the crown. As long as the eye remained lost, it was all good for King Dabura.
However, Hybis found the eye while hunting in the forest and decided to make it into a belt accessory. With King Gomah having noticed the eye while watching the Z-Warriors fighting his army, Gomah, understandably, wanted it for himself.
I liked how Degesu went about retrieving the eye from Hybis. He sent a female spy to try and seduce Hybis into giving her the eye. Of course, that didn’t work (duh!). But she was still able to trade her giant hat for the belt. Even though the anime didn’t give her a name I liked the female spy. She added a bit of comedy to ‘Third Eye’ and ‘Degesu’, with the first instance being her feeling conflicted about getting the eye so easily and yet feeling a bit disrespected over Hybis refusing to kiss her.
Other than that, she continued to have her priorities straight across the two episodes. She’s in it for the money and that wasn’t going to change even if someone like King Gomah asked her to do something. He had no choice but to reward her for any task he wanted her to do, even if it was a simple one like placing the eye on his forehead in ‘Degesu’. A true businesswoman.
Speaking of ‘Degesu’, episode 16 showed the Z-Warriors entering the castle after Vegeta easily defeated the Gendarmerie Force. Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Shin, Panzy, Glorio, and Hybis tracked down Dende’s Ki and followed it to Degesu in the hangar. Degesu was ready to fly away with Dende and we got to learn that his goal was to overthrow King Gomah.
Having seen Degesu being so loyal to King Gomah, I don’t know what to make of his true intentions. They kind of came out of nowhere for me. It wasn’t as if he was smiling menacingly in the background after nodding at King Gomah’s orders in almost every episode. Or the episodes had him talking to himself about enacting his real plan when he was alone. Compared to Degesu, I appreciate the writers being very open about Dr. Arinsu’s self-serving motivations.
Shin’s reunion with Degesu after millennia was also a bit underwhelming. Apparently, beings like them were all about striving to achieve higher power. Shin focused on keeping an eye on galaxies to maintain peace while Degesu, who Shin remembered as rash and greedy, wanted to become the King of the Demon World. I’m not saying Degeu’s goal didn’t make sense, it’s just that it was a bit undercooked.
After saving Dende, the Z-Warriors made it to the First Tamagami only for Panzy to realize that the Dragon Ball had already been won. With Dr. Arinsu and the Majin brothers arriving to meet the Z-Warriors, I’m looking forward to seeing when the writers will let Goku and the rest know about Glorio secretly working with Dr. Arinsu all this time.
However, before the inevitable reveal occurs, I do think the Z-Warriors and the Majin brothers will need to face off against King Gomah. Having placed the Third Eye into his forehead, Gomah achieved a hulking body covered in a magical aura. He’s definitely going to want to use his newfound powers ASAP.
We are reaching the finale and I’m excited about what’s going to happen next.
