Earth! Fire! Wind! Water! Heart! “Captain Planet: The Complete Franchise” Gets DVD Release This October!
Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment will be releasing Captain Planet: The Complete Franchise on DVD come October 15, 2024, and I couldn’t be more excited!
Few home releases make me yell in excitement when I receive the press release, and the upcoming debut of the Captain Planet animated series on DVD is definitely one of those rare moments. Like, you don’t understand! The kid in me is jumping with joy at the thought of being able to binge-watch the entire series later this year as well as the show being introduced to a new generation of fans.
I grew up watching Captain Planet. I even made all of the rings (with paper and tape) and wore them while imagining using the powers around the house. I can still sing the theme song. I wanted to be a Planeteer so bad. I still do! (Of course, I’ll be wearing the Water or Wind rings, if not both).
Anyway, enough about me. Let’s go over the upcoming DVD home release. Created by Ted Turner and Barbara Pyle, the physical collection will include all 113 episodes from the Captain Planet and Planeteers franchise.
The show originally aired back on September 15, 1990, and concluded on May 11, 1996. It is one of the longest-running animated cartoon shows from the 1990s.
With the premise being five teens receiving magical elemental rings to help protect the world from peril, the narrative focused heavily on fighting pollution and socio-political issues. The storytelling still hits. For example, Season 3 Episode 11 ‘A Formula for Hate’ was about a town believing rumors and turning against a teenager who had HIV/AIDS. Out queer actor Neil Patrick Harris voiced the targeted teenager.
Other voice acting talent included Martin Sheen, Meg Ryan, Whoopi Goldberg, and LeVar Burton.
Of course, the power from the five rings (Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart) could be combined to summon the planet’s greatest protector Captain Planet.
A recipient of the Film Advisory Board Award Of Excellence, Captain Planet continued to inspire and empower young environmentalists through the Captain Planet Foundation. Established by Ted Turner and Barbara Pyle, the foundation has funded over 3,700 projects worldwide, supporting hands-on environmental education and activism.
The show has been rated PG and the DVD’s running time comes in at approximately 43 hours, 31 minutes.
