Starz Saves Sex-Positive Comedy Series “Minx” After Season 2 Cancelation!
In news that made me very happy, the world will indeed be getting a Minx season 2. Starz has swooped in to save the sex-positive feminist comedy series after HBO Max decided to recently cancel it.
I wrote about Minx getting greenlit for a second season back in May of 2022. Unfortunately, HBO Max, for whatever reason, decided to cancel the series in December even though the second season had already begun production. Of course, the creative team and fans were upset. There’s a difference between canceling a show before filming and pulling the plug after new episodes are basically ready to go!
I don’t know why I decided to watch Minx in the first place. But I’m glad I did. Set in the 1970s, the show stars Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson, with the narrative being about the launch of the first-ever adult magazine for women. It’s incredibly well-written, has a bunch of laughs, and does talk about sexism in the workplace as well as other issues that still feel very timely.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the Starz family, and for the opportunity to introduce Minx to a brand new audience,” shared creator and showrunner Ellen Rapoport. “We’ve found the perfect home. Our writers, cast and crew have created something truly special in season two, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
Going by the shows that I watch on Starz, with P-Valley and Hightown being two of them, Minx fits right in. It doesn’t shy away from sharing a woman’s perspective and yes, it’s got queer representation, too. After what happened in the first season, there are three queer characters in the ensemble. The upcoming season might introduce more.
I also really liked how the writers handled the relationship between Joyce Prigger (Lovibond) and Doug Renetti (Johnson) as the two very ambitious creatives tried to find a compromise as they worked together to launch a female-centric erotic magazine while facing lots of pushback. I’m glad that the two remained friends. I’m looking forward to seeing what the second outing has in store for them.
The first season premiered back in March of 2022 and consists of 10 episodes. No release date for the second season has been announced. So, you have time to go and binge-watch the first season!
Along with Lovibond and Johnson, the cast includes Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano, and Oscar Montoya also star. Elizabeth Perkins will be part of the second season in a recurring role.
For those interested, here’s a reaction video I recorded of the premiere episode!
Are you a fan of Minx? Are you excited about a second season?
