With the Pokémon Company rolling out a 30th Anniversary celebration, fans have been treated to an official announcement trailer for the upcoming Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves video games featuring the three new starters.

If you have been visiting fandom spaces that deal with leaks, most of the things shown in the official announcement trailer for Pokémon Winds and Waves were expected. The story appears to be set in a location inspired by Southeast Asia. As stated in the titles of the two games, there’s plenty of water and open skies for fans to enjoy. A major gameplay mechanic seems to be the ability to dive deep underwater. As someone who thinks of themselves as a Water Type Pokémon Trainer, I’m so here for being able to explore underwater and getting to enjoy seeing Water Pokémon going about their day, under the sea, as we are used to seeing land-bound Pokémon running and hopping around.

Talking about the Starter trio, the Grass Type is called Browt, because yeah, that creature has a brow. It’s described as a lively but clumsy Bean Chick Pokémon. The Fire Type, which (from what I can see) has quickly become a fan-favorite online, is called Pombon. It’s supposed to be a guileless and friendly Puppy Pokémon. The Water Type is called Gecqua. That lizard-like creature is supposed to be intelligent.

Frankly, I’m a bit torn having just seen the designs of the Starter trio. Maybe they will grow on me. Let’s see. But yeah, Browt appears too close to Rowlet. The poor little bird has already been selected to be the target of fandom ridicule, with many calling it Temu Rowlet or something you would see in an Angry Birds game.

Gecqua seems related to Sobble. The jokes surrounding Gecqua seem to be about how most of the recent Water Type Pokémon starters have been queer-coded. And I’m okay with that.

Pombon is the cutest to me. However, I’m side-eying the fire puppy because there’s a chance, considering the trackrecord for Fire Type Starters, that it might evolve into a Pokémon that stands on it’s hindlegs. I hope that doesn’t happen. And so do numerous other fans.

The trailer also involved two types of Pikachu. They’re supposed to be Mr. Windychu and Ms. Wavychu.

The texture of the water does look quite appealing. The overall visuals also appear to be stepup from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and not to mention the visual letdown that was Pokémon Legends ZA. But keep in mind that the footage isn’t actual gameplay content. I have my fingers crossed for this title not to feel rushed into development.

A whole lot of information will be shared throughout the year because, in news that disappointed fans, Pokémon Waves and Pokémon Winds will be released sometime in 2027. That does feel far away, especially with how the leaks were hyping the fandom to expect a major Pokémon game later this year.

Developed by GAME FREAK, this title will exclusively be for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Are you excited about playing Pokémon Winds and Waves? Which starter will you be picking?
