The trailer for the upcoming Indian film Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui has been released. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor, the social comedy highlights a cishet man falling in love with a transgender woman.

Some of you might remember Ayushmann Khurrana from the 2020 queer comedy Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. In it, Khurrana played one half of a gay couple facing homophobia and taking a stand for their love in front of their families. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (which can, more or less, be translated in English to mean ‘Chandigarh loves’) sees Khurrana return for another queer-centric film.

In the upcoming movie, Manvinder Munjal (Khurrana) falls in love with a transgender woman named Maanvi Brar (played by Vaani Kapoor). But things get out of hand when Maanvi tells Manvinder aka Manu the truth about herself. Judging by the trailer, it looks like the narrative will have Manu realize that love is love and he actually wants to be with Maanvi.

Check it out!

Would I have liked a trans actress to play the lead in such a movie? Of course! However, I still think seeing a Bollywood film deciding to tell such a love story should be commended. Having said that, here’s hoping Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui has actual transgender talent appear onscreen in some capacity.

From what I could find, there wasn’t any transgender talent behind the camera in a producing or writing position. So, there’s a risk of this movie possibly featuring transphobic remarks for cheap laughs or portraying harmful stereotypes because the writers didn’t know any better.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this film will be received by the audience, especially by the members of the transgender community in India.

Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui will be released on December 10, 2021.
