iZombie 2×14 Review: Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind

“Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind” admittedly started quite slow, but ended up with so many revelations – it was a spoiler dream! And I would be doing everyone a disservice by not going into those spoilers.

So needless to say, please continue reading at your own risk as this article does contain the many bombshells dropped on us in “Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind”.

I am definitely not a morning person, so the whole Positivity Coffee thing was annoying, which luckily was the point. Seattle’s Daily Grind is more my style. It’s important to note that overall, Liv’s brain personality was understated in “Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind”. I could handle the positive quips, and the coffee consumption was minimal, so it wasn’t as bothersome as it sometimes is.

The good news is that Ravi was able to come up with a new solution to hopefully cure the Z virus from the tainted utopium, but the bad news is that the test on one of the rats didn’t go so well…which means the future looks bleak for Major and Blaine. Fortunately, one of the big bombshells that landed on us tonight is that Blaine has reverted back to being a zombie! There were signs abound throughout the episode that the change was coming, from the fact that the wine tasted funny to him, to him turning Candy into a zombie. But the show actually went there, and had Mr. Boss’s cronies off him, only for him to come back as the undead and terrify some tween girls. This show is best when it pushes boundaries, and I feel like having Blaine become a zombie again was a very wise choice. I love zombie David Anders!

Speaking of Mr. Boss, I am still confused about that whole storyline, but we actually got some much-needed clarification in the episode. It turns out that pre-zombie Blaine was a drug dealer for Mr. Boss, and that is where the utopium came from. So Mr. Boss was literally Blaine’s drug boss. It took way too long for me to catch onto this story line, but I’m glad that things are starting to fall into place. Now the question is whether Blaine will make himself known right away (and likely boldly) or if he will lay low for a while.

And where exactly does Max Rager fall into the equation? The Max Rager story did come up a bit in this episode, but it evolved from Liv finally figuring out that Rita and Gilda are one and the same (thanks, Major!). Although I liked this development, Liv’s reaction took me a bit out of the scene. I understand that Liv was upset, but it seemed out of character for her to resort to violence. And then why was she able to reign in the full-on zombie? Perhaps it was because she was on positivity brains? I also want to know if Major purposely called Rita by the wrong name (since he had just

been introduced to her as Gilda), or if he slipped. Either way, it launched that storyline forward, which I am grateful for.

I think I’ve made it pretty clear throughout the past few episode reviews that I’m not a huge fan of Drake. I miss Lowell, and I feel like Drake has a weird energy and no chemistry with Liv. Apparently that was because I didn’t see the triple-cross move that Drake is an undercover cop! For me, this was the biggest bombshell that came out of “Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind”, and it left me squealing in delight. I LOVE Drake as a cop, and it makes his role in everything make much more sense. And it also makes sense as to why he would want to remain close to Liv. I don’t see things going well for him in the future now that we have a much more complicated character on our hands. But please, keep Drake around for a little longer. I don’t know if poor Liv could handle another dead boyfriend! That said, I’m sure he will be around for a bit because how can the writers resist more relationship angst for Liv having to decide between Drake and Major, who will inevitably become a zombie again soon?

I didn’t have a very bright outlook for “Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind” in the beginning, but after Blaine reverted to being a zombie, Liv found out about Rita, and the Drake-being-a-cop reveal, it became one of the most active and revelatory episodes in the series. I loved it!
