Netflix’s “Sex Education” Season 2 Gets January 17 Release! Eric & Adam’s Queer Issues Will Continue?

Netflix has announced it will release Sex Education season 2 come January 17, 2020. The show focuses on discussing sexuality through narratives featuring teenage characters. While the trailer looks fun, it seems the problematic theme between queer characters Eric and Adam will continue. Sigh!

Sex Education is a British comedy about a young boy, named Otis (Asa Butterfield), who ends up becoming a sex therapist at his high school. Through Otis, we get to see the numerous issues teens face when it comes to dealing with sexuality.

What’s interesting is that Otis has trouble accepting his sexual desires. The first season showed him trying to be more open about what he wants. His mother, played by Gillian Anderson, is an actual sex therapist. So, you can kind of understand how Otis’ mother’s profession impacted him.     

From the trailer for the second season, it seems Anderson’s character will have a more involved role because of a chlamydia outbreak.

Of course, her involvement won’t be doing Otis any favors.

Now, I was enjoying the trailer for Sex Education season 2 until it showed Adam’s return in Eric’s life.

As far as my opinion goes, while Netflix is offering a lot of queer representation to the world, there’s an issue with quantity vs quality. With Netflix, there’s a lot of quantity, but not impressive quality. Most queer narratives are problematic. Eric and Adam’s relationship is an example of that.

Basically, Adam is Eric’s high school bully. The first season continued to show them finally hooking up during detention.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not a fan of storylines that have survivors of bullying beginning a romantic relationship with their bully.

I expected better from Netflix when the first season debuted in 2019. Freaking Glee, all those years back, did a far better job of handling the survivor-bully dynamic with Kurt Hummel and Dave Krafosky.

When Adam left the show at the end of season one, I was glad about it. I don’t have time to watch toxic queer relationships. I was hoping Eric would find someone better in the second season. But with Adam coming back, I don’t think that will happen.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against Eric and Adam being in a relationship, let’s say, five or six years down the line after they have both matured. Though, even then, it would be problematic.

If the writers want Eric and Adam to hookup, I just hope they try and handle the situation as sensitively as possible. But considering how messy Sex Education is, I won’t be holding my breath.

Bullied queer high schoolers thinking their bully is a closeted queer person and will one day fall in love with them is just not a healthy thought to have.

Your bully, even if they are in the closet, is not worth throwing your self-respect (and safety) away.

Anyway, the first season consisted of 8 episodes. So, I take it the second season will have the same amount, too? I’m not sure.

Along with Butterfield and Anderson, the cast also includes Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Alistair Petrie, Mimi Keene, Aimee Lou Wood, and Patricia Allison.
