“DC x Sonic the Hedgehog” Issue 1 “Chaos Crisis – Part 1” – Review

DC x Sonic the Hedgehog issue 1 served as an immensely enjoyable debut to the current 6-part miniseries as Sonic and his friends teamed up with the Justice League to stop Darkseid.
From writer Ian Flynn and artist Adam Bryce Thomas (with Matt Herms on colors), ‘Chaos Crisis’ Part 1 has me excited for the rest of the chapters in the current crossover miniseries. The latest issue treated me to a whole bunch of action, dynamic visuals, and fun interactions between iconic characters from completely different dimensions. What might come across as an excuse to make a quick buck due to the recent hype around the Sonic the Hedgehog IP ended up being an actually well-written story that just made sense.
The premise is easy enough to understand. The story opened with Sonic’s dimension being attacked by Darkseid on his quest to obtain the Chaos Emeralds. Though Sonic and his crew put up a fight against Darkseid’s forces, they needed help. Fortunately, the Justice League followed Darkseid and were more than happy to lend aid to save Sonic’s world. The Justice League roster included Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Cyborg, and The Flash.
Instead of fighting each other over a misunderstanding (points for that!), both teams shared information to get everybody on the same page about Darkseid’s mission and the Chaos Emeralds. Of course, a crossover such as this one had the characters pair up to cover more ground to get to the Emeralds before Darkseid. We got Superman with Knuckles. Cyborg and Tails (obviously), Batman with Shadow (duh!), Silver and Green Lantern, Amy with Wonder Woman. And, because the fans wouldn’t have had it any other way, Sonic with The Flash.
My only nitpicky gripe would be the creative team pairing up the two female characters together. But, oh well. Personally, I would have had Amy with Superman and Knuckles with Wonder Woman.
Sonic running around with The Flash allowed for some comedic moments where the two threw shade at each other about who was the fastest of the two. I mean, The Flash can manipulate time and even entire timelines with his speed. So, I think he’s the winner in such a competition. But it was still fun to see how their dynamic was handled. This book is primarily meant for a younger audience, so the banter was all in good fun.
Batman’s interaction with Shadow led to the two brooding characters bonding over the tragic loss of loved ones. Their team-up was a bit too predictable. But I understand why it was done.
I liked how the Justice League respected Sonic and his friends as superpowered allies while also being aware that, at the end of the day, they were dealing with kids.

The first issue ended on a very unexpected cliffhanger for me. I’m quite excited to see what will happen next because it looks like Darkseid is extremely serious about collecting the Chaos Emeralds. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of Sonic’s villains decide to partner up with Darkseid.
The visuals are colorful, with the Justice League designs melding well with the artistic style of Sonic’s dimension. No one seemed off to me.
