Steam Demo Released For Bouncy Frog Platformer “Croak”

WoodRunner Games has made the demo for their upcoming platformer Croak available on Steam. You get to play as a Frog Prince as he adventures through the Feast Fair.

Based in Québec, Canada, developer WoodRunner Games has described Croak as an action-adventure 2D platformer that features a lot of whimsy. The hand-drawn game has been animated by talent that previously worked on Cuphead. Other inspirations include Disney and Studio Ghibli. You can see that sense of style in the promotional material.

The narrative for this indie game involves a strange carnival hosted by the kingdom’s witch. Having to trek through various levels that include blooming swamps, scenic landscapes, and obscure locations, the Frog Prince relies on his sticky tongue and a very bouncy body to overcome obstacles.

The fun gameplay caught my attention. The frog’s tongue is for grappling and launching. The pinball-style momentum offers a bunch of ways to interact with the environment. Players will be encouraged to take in everything being displayed onscreen to find the proper way to continue completing puzzle-filled levels, which, of course, includes secrets.

According to the dev team, Croak will feature “over 1,000 rooms across diverse biomes, packed with environment-centered mechanics and escalating difficulty.”

The game does have main levels accompanied by achievements and boss encounters. However, for those who want more, there are also unlockable high-challenge levels meant for testing a player’s limits. You can aim to collect all of the hidden coins or speedrun levels.

The current demo for Croak, available on Steam, allows players to experience the game’s first region: the sprawling grounds of a twisted carnival orchestrated by The Witch. You can play through 5 levels, including the Ferris Wheel challenge and the Beaver Boss Fight. There’s also a hidden high-difficulty level for you to unlock. Players can test their skills to win 11 Gold medals.
