Epic Epcot Marvel News – Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Buckle up, Marvel fans! Epcot is about to get a new Guardians of the Galaxy themed ride, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

D23 has been filled with incredible news all weekend, including Disney+ programs (like Ms Marvel), upcoming live action and animated films, and so much more.  Today we got an extensive breakdown of Epcot renovations during the Sneak Peak! Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products panel, including the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind attraction.

Cosmic Rewind Guardians EPCOT
Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will be the first “other-world” showcase pavilion at Epcot. The attraction will feature a new storytelling coaster that rotates to focus guests on the action, and will include the first reverse launch on a Disney coaster. (Disney/Marvel)

Cosmic Rewind will be a reverse launch roller coaster that launches riders “into space.” It’s described as the “first” to do so.  It’s not the first reverse launch roller coaster, of course, nor is it the first one with a space theme (hello, Space Mountain), but it is the first to combine the two.

Besides the reverse launch and “space” aspects of it, there aren’t too many details, but I have faith this ride will deliver.  The Guardians of the Galaxy ride at Disney’s California adventure is incredibly fun, so I expect them to have top-notch immersion here as well.  When I visited the park in 2016, I rode it no less than three times.  It’s just that good.  Then again, Guardians of the Galaxy has been my favorite Marvel series of films since the first one dropped back in 2014, so maybe my bias is showing.  With that information in hand, take my enthusiasm with a grain of salt, I suppose.

There were many more Epcot updates announced at the event, including a Mary Poppins ride, a new restaurant called Space 2020, a Moana ride, a new pavilion at World Celebration, and a new show called “HarmonioUS.”  It’s a fairly extensive overhaul for the park, all things considered.  And a needed one, considering many of the pavilions have been somewhat neglected over the years. (Let’s take a moment to remember the degradation and theft of poor Buzzy.)  These updates should infuse some much needed life into the park.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will be separate from the Marvel Campus announced on Friday.  The Marvel Campus will be at the California side of the US-based Disney theme parks, specifically located in Disney’s California Adventure.  This means both coasts of the United States get new, exciting Marvel-themed attractions, though.  That means us nerds will have some pretty expensive cross continent vacations in our future.  And for those of you outside the United States, it seems there will be a Marvel campus in Paris, too, and a Stark Expo in Hong Kong.  So you may have an option closer to home.

My wallet was already weeping with news of the Star Wars hotel, but now it’s a full on sobbing mess.  I’m about to be very broke.  The Guardians of the Galaxy ride won’t open until 2021, though, so I’ve got some time to save my pennies in preparation.  No word on when the Star Wars hotel will open, so my incredibly expensive geek journey to Florida may get stuck in a holding pattern until that bit gets confirmed.
