“Lore Olympus” Webtoon Soon to Be an Animated Series

Lore Olympus Cartoon

Back when I started recommending webcomics hosted by Webtoon, one of the first titles I recommended was Lore Olympus, a modernized retelling of Greek mythology, mostly focusing on the story of Hades and Persephone. Now, a Lore Olympus cartoon is in the works, thanks to the Jim Henson Company.

Deadline broke the news about the Lore Olympus cartoon earlier today. Webtoon’s partnership with the Jim Henson Company will develop the highly stylized, contemporary version of Olympus as an animated series aimed at young adults. In Rachel Smythe’s comic, the iconic gods and goddesses from the Greek pantheon are reimagined as students (Persephone) and businessmen (Hades) driving sleek cars instead of chariots, with the Underworld being a gigantic office building.

The official synopsis from Webtoon reads:

Witness what the gods do…after dark. The friendships and the lies, the gossip and the wild parties, and of course, forbidden love. Because it turns out, the gods aren’t so different from us after all, especially when it comes to their problems. Stylish and immersive, this is one of mythology’s greatest stories — The Taking of Persephone — as it’s never been told before.

Webtoon’s top title, the weekly comic gets over a million hits for each episode, and the Jim Henson Company is the perfect studio to bring the unique art style to life, so to speak.

“At Henson, we love stories that inspire, both artistically and intellectually, and Webtoon’s Lore Olympus does both,” said Ashley Griffis, executive director of television for The Henson Company. “Rachel Smythe’s new take on mythology and innovative design, with a unique female perspective, makes this project perfect for today’s young adults. The world of Lore Olympus is a welcome part of the Henson tradition of exceptional fantasy storytelling.”

“We are thrilled to partner with The Jim Henson Company, a beloved brand known for its commitment to quality entertainment,” said Taylor Grant, Webtoon’s Senior Vice President of IP Development. “The combination of our tremendously successful IP along with the. creative expertise of The Jim Henson company provides an opportunity to deliver a unique animated series unlike any we’ve seen before. We are excited to expand the Lore Olympus universe and bring it to life for a whole new audience.”

We at The Geekiary are massive fans of Lore Olympus and extremely excited about this development! We will be following news about the Lore Olympus cartoon with great anticipation. If you haven’t yet checked out the comic, I highly recommend doing so. This is the perfect opportunity!

Also, if you’re attending LA Comic Con this weekend, make sure to check out Webtoon’s many events. Lore Olympus creator and Eisner nominee Rachel Smythe will be in attendance, along with a number of other top talents.
