Since Captain America’s introduction in 1941, a number of people have taken up the mantle originally held by Steve Rogers – Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson…and now Peggy Carter. You’d better do as she says, boys. She’s got the shield.
Peggy Carter was a minor character in Marvel Comics. She didn’t appear until 1966, and even then it was mostly as Steve Rogers’ love interest. With the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peggy got a bigger role. She was still Steve’s love interest, but she’s given a meatier role, aiding Steve and the Howling Commandos as they try to take down Red Skull and Hydra. Peggy made an appearance in several MCU films — the first two Captain America movies, a brief cameo in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and a scene at the beginning of Ant-Man. We learn that Peggy, along with Howard Stark, helped found S.H.I.E.L.D. She also had a multi-episode guest spot on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., appearing in several flashbacks. And of course, the sadly short-lived Agent Carter, which followed Peggy’s career advancement in the Strategic Scientific Reserve.
Now she’s been given the ultimate promotion — that of Captain America. In the latest series of Exiles – written by Saladin Ahmed with art by Javier Rodriguez, Alvaro Lopez, and Jordie Bellaire and Joe Caramagna – Nick Fury recruits alternate versions of some of our favorite heroes to save the multiverse. It’s in issue #3 that our team meets alternate-universe Captain America, aka Peggy Carter.
CAPTAIN CARTER KILLS THE RED SKULL!
That’s her mission, anyway! The fan-favorite Captain America — Peggy Carter of the Marvel Puzzle Quest game — faces off against an apocalyptically armed Red Skull! And the Exiles are just in time to join the fight — ’cuz they’ve been kicked off their mission! There’s a new team of Watchers in town, and they’re cracking down on the Exiles’ interference in the timestream — even if it means the death of everything. Can the Exiles salvage Peggy Carter’s world, fix the Tallus and get back to saving reality before the Time-Eater tracks them down again?
Exiles is scheduled to hit stands in May.
If you just can’t wait to see Peggy do some ass-kicking with Cap’s shield, check out the mobile game Marvel Puzzle Quest. An alternate version of Peggy-as-Captain-America has been a playable character since 2016, as part of the promotion for Captain America’s 75th anniversary.
What do you guys think of this news? Are you excited for all the upcoming Peggy-as-Captain-America cosplay?
